The Old Folks Home

We used 4x6 welded wire and treated fence posts the top we used wood on the hen run on top of the fence posts and in the rooster run DH used some pipe he had laying around to keep the top up high enough so we can walk thru the runs. We also used some heavy duty rubberized tarp over part of the hen run to protect them from the weather or sun.

Awesome job. I had to do some tarping to the duck house today. It's welded wire on the top and a bit on 2 sides. It's been way too rainy and soon to be snowy, so they got their tarp back this morning.

I think we are the only one sup-- unless SCG is too busy in the kitchen already!!

Yeah, I've been up for awhile. What I listed yesterday was in addition to the weekend chores - clean out the goat and duck houses, disinfect all the waterers and feeders and buckets... I got most of that done before it started pouring. Now I'm making the regular bread, cleaning up the dishes from last night (piles of clean dishes all over the counter because in addition to what we did BF smoked some ribs and made steaks) and hopefully going to start soon on the rest of it. Unfortunately the girl that is coming over is chronically late. She said 11, so I'm guessing that means leaving her house at 1130 and then hitting up the store and then getting over here about 1. That drives me nuts. She insists that because I'm a friend and not her job that she can be late. I insist that I'll continue to bug her via phone and text messages until she gets here. 11 means 1050 in my opinion.

She must be a good friend . . . other wise that would annoy me right out of a friendship.

Made egg tortillas filled with refried beans, topped with salsa with added chopped tomatos and monterey jack cheese. Put in oven and let cheese melt. DH like it, need feedback from kids.

I got a smoker yesterday!!! How could I have forgotten that!!! We helped with a clean up at a VFW and boy it hadn't been cleaned up in a while. The boy scouts dug in and really cleaned up for 4 hours. 11 people for 4 hours!! It was truely a wonderful day and met some people I would like to continue to supporting the VFW and the men. SO that is how I got the smoker, they wanted it GONE. My son wanted it , I wanted it but could not fit it in my car so I didn't jump on it. One of the guys offered to drive it over!!!! It's in great shape and is BIG enough to hold 2 BBW turkeys!!

That's great that you got a smoker. Guess I know how you're making your CdM birds for Thanksgiving!

Our smoker is on loan... the girl that is coming over today, her husband is BF's really good friend. It's his smoker.

At least BF understands that "on time" is "at least 5 minutes early" - so we don't ever clash over that. That would be a dealbreaker for me.

I think I'm going to start some apple pie filling to can. I need to put my applebutter into jars, but I don't have any more small jars left. They are coming with my guest, hopefully at some point today.

((smile))

Glad you can see the bright side of the situation.

I'm still looking for sugar free recipes. Sugar just sends my body in to hot flashes in 20 minutes flat. I wonder if other sugars do this too?? LIke honey, or molasses? Oh right-- I know molasses ia a hot flash trigger. I have dropped it from my low carb cheesecake recipe and upped the cinnamon to compensate.

My mother used to make a lovely pickle made from cinnamon and cloves and sugar and vinegar solution with pumpkin cubes. With age they got better and better.

Apples here are pricey. Hopefully I can get utility apples at some point. I miss picking apples off the old trees around my mothers place. All the trees here didn't make it. I need to plant some more. BUt this time keep the brush from growing up so fast and out growing the apple trees.

I have a far greater appreciation for homesteaders in the early years.

I'm exhausted. We picked a bushel of apples (and a friend picked another half). I've used up half already. Two batches of apple butter (still cooking down), one batch of apple maple jam (plus another batch with a friend), an apple pie from scratch (with homemade vanilla custard ice cream - same recipe as previously posted but without the pecans)... tomorrow is more apple pancakes (for guests who really want it), canning the apple butter, plus another thing of apple maple jam, plus make some apple bread and cinnamon spread for it. And my regular two loaves of bread... and I gotta finish up my sewing project. And BF bought me another gallon of unpasteurized milk at the farm today for me to make mozzarella.

Are you sure you have time for a Job?

My little blue hen has become an annoying pest. I dive in the yard. TUrn off the engine, collect a few things and voila, she is on the roof!! DH mentioned he couldn't keep her out the car while he was cleaning it!!. SHe has a new place to pay her eggs.

Found 1 egg so far in the car.

Guess a new nest box goes on the to do list for today!

Make sure it's shaped like a car!

in the past couple of months, I have been more "social" IRL than I have been since I retired. My good friends used to "depend" that I would be home any time they called or dropped by. Looking for property has been part of it, but it got me off my butt and out into the community. I've become a "regular" at The Pub - daytime only. I can follow threads on BYC on my iPad there, play some computer games (found a great Jigsaw Puzzle application I enjoy very much) AND meet a lot of local folks. They have given me great information, good contacts, and I enjoy -for the first time in many years - real, face-to-face conversation. Plus, I have to bathe and dress, y'know, to be in public. ;) I am not into wine tasting as a past-time. It's nice to hang out some place where patrons are encouraged to hang out, and something other than wine is available to drink. i can drink diet soda, water, cranberry juice all day if i want. (But there are some really great beers on tap...) The Pub food menu is quite good. It turns out the property next to the place I'm buying belongs to one of the Pub owners (it's a vineyard with a residence on site). I've picked up contacts for iron fence/gate folks, tree removal, local honey from a bee-keeper who would love to put a/some hive(s) on my property next year. Chatted up a goat farmer who sells an expensive breed but does have "pet quality" stock available (through heavy culling...) when I get around to wanting goats. Plus I am learning a great deal about the community in which I live. The Pub has wi-fi but is an AT&T dead spot for cell service. Anyway, I am just reporting that I am no longer a house-bound by choice slug.
