The Old Folks Home

Okay why didn't you guys tell me how funny ducklings are. I picked up 3 muskovy chicks the awhile back, and yesterday (30 day quarantine over) they went out to live in the coop.Their hilarious, the brown girl has been named Darnyou because she can get out of anything and into everything. My pullet EE Hawk has decided shes a duck and follows them everywhere.
On a less fun note several of my unwanteds have bumble foot. I started treatment on the healthier 2 yesterday. Should I put the 2 skinny ones through it now or wait till they gain some weight? The procedure seems pretty traumatic for an already stressed body?

Thanks

Why would we warn you about ducklings? They're not cute or anything.

I don't actually treat bumble until it becomes really big and painful. If it's a pretty smallish bumble you can let it wait a bit for your birds to get more healthy. I know it's painful for them both to be untreated and to be treated, but I wouldn't want to dig around in a biddies foot if they were weak. Most of mine shake, whether from being scared or from the pain, I do not know.

That's what I figured. Working with rehabbing reptiles sometimes less is more.I'll wait, they seem to be walking okay it just looks bad.

I've also found that after a good freeze the bumbles seem to go away. I have no idea why (maybe the bacteria die?) but I'd rather wait if I can and let it heal on its own than dig around in there. I only dig when I have to. I also only do one at a time - pick the worst and work on that one, get it better, then do another.

Does anyone on here that sews have anything that they love to make for newborns that is pretty easy for those of us sewing beginners?

I found this: http://www.allfreesewing.com/Sewing-for-Baby/Monogram-Taggie that I think I could make although it won't be near as pretty.

And my friend suggested this: http://www.thisishappystuff.com/?p=2115

But I'm fairly sure the snail won't be appreciated until probably 2-3 years old.

Would love to hear what you guys make... and please, if there's a pattern, send it along this way.

scg--

When my children were babies, I used a lot of quilt type items. As babies, they need a buffer between them and the floor that is clean. THe spit up and have accidents, so afew or more are nice to have. Bibs-- went thru those almost as fast as diapers. I used white wash clothes with a circle cut out using a soup can. Ran the raw edges thru the sewing machine on zigzag and added snaps 101 uses. Maybe use fun colors . . .

My babies wore caps a lot to keep warm. knitted cloth types.

If you up to learning knitting-- my kids wnet thru mittens like crazy-- notheing better than handmade mittens to keep out the snow at all ages.

SCG I like the hooded bath towel idea on the same page you listed (Monogram Taggie). It looks really simple to make and a few of them come in handy for newborns. You wouldn't have to make one so big but if you follow the idea on a smaller scale I think it would be adorable. In fact, one day when I have grandchildren (I can wait, for sure!) I would love to make one with a dinosaur theme (DD would love it) or a chicken (I would love that one). I can see many different animals you could do with this idea.

Arielle, I need to learn to quilt. That's on my agenda, but I don't know how. I sat in B&N and read a few chapters of "quilting for dummies" and realized I wasn't even a dummy, yet.
I might try a bib and possibly some mittens.

I hope you have grandchildren soon. I need to have more kids to make fun stuff for.

I ended up making a star tag (and my first ever attempt at a star):
