Scott, was your runner friend the type that did 5K's etc.? I ask because I used to do charity walks - note: walks not runs. The runners were streamlined like a emaciated greyhound . If they had an ounce of fat anywhere on their bodies, it was well hidden. I can see "this type" of runner having a short lifespan. You need a certain amount of fat to survive.
Then again I think genetics are a strong component. But who really knows.
