The Old Folks Home

Scott, was your runner friend the type that did 5K's etc.? I ask because I used to do charity walks - note: walks not runs. The runners were streamlined like a emaciated greyhound . If they had an ounce of fat anywhere on their bodies, it was well hidden. I can see "this type" of runner having a short lifespan. You need a certain amount of fat to survive.

Then again I think genetics are a strong component. But who really knows.

SCG my favorite Thanksgiving recipe is the turkey gravy recipe in the book How to Make Sauces & Gravies. It is the best gravy I have ever made. It takes a long time to make but man is it good. I also love my dad's stuffing recipe but that one is hard to write down because it's never been written down and I do it all from memory and to taste. It is just your basic bread stuffing (NO CRANBERRIES IN IT!!!!). The "secret" to getting it right is the Bells seasoning. It has to be Bells or it's not right.

I wish the biddies were laying well. 60ish girls and I get 2 to 3 eggs a day right now. Even the duck hasn't laid in a few days. Last year I was able to make egg nog I had so many eggs.

I just finished cleaning the coop (s/p mite treatment 5 weeks ago). I still haven't seen any mites on the girls since I treated them with FrontLine Plus. I will do one more FrontLine treatment before the winter really sets in, just in case, and I'll have a full report back afterwards on the efficacy of a one time treatment of FrontLine plus a good coop cleaning/treatment (versus weeks and weeks of permethrin or ivermectin treatments).

I'm trying to decide if I want to get my goat(s) pregnant this year or wait another year. I think they've made weight (I need to verify that this weekend) but I'm not sure I have time to milk them once or twice a day. I'm sure I'd find time but it seems like I'm so busy and already stressed out. But I also want milk. And cheese. Mmmhhh. My goats seem like they'd both be good milkers, especially Caramel though. I've been getting them ready for milking daily. Caramel loves to be fake milked and stands very still and wags her tail so excitedly when I tell her what a good milker she's going to be. Pippy still fights it just a little bit. I have probably 17 more days before they go back into heat again.

I hope they start laying for you soon too.

How exciting about getting goat milk.

SCG which recipe? The gravy recipe is really long because of the steps you have to follow. I recommend getting the book. It has all kinds of different sauce and gravy recipes. If you want the stuffing recipe, that one is much easier to type out.
