The Old Folks Home

Gosh D squared... I hope you ate Steaks as opposed to stakes...

I do feel bad (most of the time) butchering the boys, but I'd rather they lead a happy (if short) life and then serve a greater purpose. And if I can, I'd rather they serve my purpose instead of another person.

It's always something around here. Just a few minutes ago BF was doing the dishes (he's so well trained) and noticed the biddies were acting really on guard. He gets the Walther and heads out onto the porch and notices a skunk in the chicken run going after the birds. Couple of shots, and he hits it, but it runs off. He goes and gets his shoes and goes out after it (despite the fact that it's a predator, it shouldn't suffer) and I went out too to help. It's pouring. He trekked through the poison ivy in shorts. The coop and run smell to nauseating levels. We didn't end up finding it, unfortunately. I have to say I'm glad it's raining and not super humid and hot because the smell would be so much worse.
How terrible!

Did you lose any chickens?

DiDi, yes, Thanksgiving Point. :)

You got some beautiful photos! I love the shadow one..of the little walk way. And the fish!

Ooo, you should get down there to get some of the tulips next spring. They are colorful all year out there. Now, for the fall photos. You need to go get some of the orange come fall! :)

BF caught it quickly enough that everyone is alive. But now I suspect that it was this jerk that ate my babies in the hoop house overnight.

We have so many skunks here. Over the past few years seems like we have to take out a couple skunks each season.

I got up at 4 (couldn't sleep in). And it has been light then recently, but with the solstice passing and the big storm over us, it was a bit darker than usual. I waited 20 minutes and then decided to just let everyone out, even though it was still not completely light out. I do the chickens, I do the ducks and as I'm opening the goat gate I look down to find a (very alive) skunk. It ran, and I wasn't armed.

Quote: Thank goodness your BF ran him off! And I would not know what to do if I ran into a skunk! WOW
I hate skunks we get them all the time our dogs run them off and stink forever! Twice they have penned them in the shed for a week and they have a mexican stand off! Everyone of them and the shed stink so bad that I won't go outside!

I bet that shed is intolerable. I almost threw up the coop was so bad last night. I left the eggs in there much to the broodies delight cause I sure didn't want them!
I don't blame you for leaving the eggs I'm sure they smell as bad as the coop!
After I smelled the skunk I only went outside to get in the truck to leave the smell was so bad! I did not want the dogs anywhere near me! DH cannot smell so he did not care.
