The Old Folks Home

It's dropping to 56 here tonight, and tomorrow's high will only be 72. I can't even imagine -75. I would be packing up, lock, stock, and barrel, and moving somewhere warmer.

Yup I agree with what@ozexpat said....

Dont your lungs freeze at 75 below zero or something like that. I hope when you all go outside if you have to you cover your faces and eyes with something.... And I have been griping because its been in the thirties here at night. Today in the day it got up to 72... tomorrow they are expecting high seventies to low eighties during the day.

I loved it too, Alaskan! So glad to hear you are warm, honest. I'm not taking our situation so lightly anymore.
They've started posting the school closings and even closed a highway or two to our north. What the???? missed the evening news as we were watching football. So I rechecked the weather report, yep it's been revised.. We are under windchill warnings now until Tuesday pm with the potential of windchills dropping by tomorrow night for our area to as low windchills to -75 F!!!! I had to check that twice, we have dropped pretty low before but Never close to that!!! I am going to need to seriously re-think my livestock strategy. Sustained temps of actual -30 to -40 F (Ihope no lower) can turn wiring as brittle as ice cicles and checking the wiring every fall to the coop and workshop was always something I did but I never got to it. As Alaskan and the northerners know, that is something you just can't do once the snow crusts over. I may need to bring in all my critter transport carriers from the workshop to make sure I have them ready to go in case something happens to the power to the outbuildings.

Why do I suddenly feel too old to be living here??? Thanks in advance for letting me vent.

I keep everyone locked in when it gets super cold. Do you need the power to the outbuildings? Would all your "critters" fit indoors?

I think we're having sympathy weather here for you. Windchills at -30 tonight. Likely everyone is going to need to be indoors for the duration, except the ducks... which I can't do anything about. The ducks at least have their house and a doghouse they can go in to get away from it.

wouldnt they just use a snow drift?

Bahahaha

Morning everyone
Thanks for letting me vent and all the good thoughts. We made it thru pretty good last night. It's only -25 this morning with a -40 windchill. Did I just say "only"??? Highs are supposed to get to -10F and now it looks like, thanks to the snowstorm to our south (yea) we may not get as rough a windchill tonight as originally predicted but they won't commit yet to what that actually means.

Let's see, questions.
Yep, Oz, times like this I think we are "figgin nuts".
Yep, whoever asked, when it gets this cold we need power to the coop to keep the birds alive even tho ours is heavily insulated. We have an oil-filled radiator type heater that is set to keep the roost just above freezing but this morning we had to crank it up a little for the first time because the water was froze solid and it is just too cold outside to keep hauling fresh water out there.
Just getting the dog out to do her business is getting complicated because this cold and dry air can damage her lungs as well as ours.
We can bring all critters into the house if it becomes necessary and we would not hesitate to do so.
I agree Diva. I hate the heat more than the cold and I had a dr many years ago tell me to move to Arizona for the drier air (before we moved up here) I'm just not sure how much longer we can keep up with the physical work needed just to live here. We have no family close. BUT, I know we won't give up any time soon. I do have to admit I wouldn't mind moving a zone or two further south where the winter doesn't last quite as long but we are all paid for and I don't think we could handle starting over with a mortgage at today's rates.

So glad you weren't as col as expected chicki. That's still alot colder than I want to deal with. We had 7F this morning. Now it's 9 and wind at 15 mph. Wind chill is -11. That's colder than I want too. Expexting 2-4 inches by tonight. Maybe the snow chicki isn't getting. :idunno
