Never heard of a rabies vaccination for humans... There is a set of shots one has to take if bitten by a possibly or known rabies infected animal...

There are rabies shots for humans. There's 2 different "courses" to be given:

1. Post-exposure prophylaxis - meaning you were bit/exposed to fluid of something that may have had rabies. This includes being asleep or being a child or disabled adult in a room with bats which in this country have a high rate of rabies. You get immune globulin (basically immune particles from a host that has been exposed to the virus and can readily combat any virus in your system) to immediately combat any rabies virus in your blood... first. Then you get a series of vaccinations to build up your own immunity. The immune response to a vaccine can take weeks so you need the globulin to immediately combat any virus you may have.

2. Pre-exposure prophylaxis - meaning you may be exposed to rabies in the course of your work but haven't yet. People who work with animals (vets, vet tech, animal control) or their products (bones, skin, fur) get this series. It's just scheduled rabies immunizations to build up your own immunity to the virus. It doesn't mean if #1 happens (you get bit or exposed) you're okay, but it generally means you still get immune globulin, but less vaccine after the exposure.

Hope this helps. Thank you for consulting your friendly neighborhood pharmacist.

and does the Human vaccine have to be done every X amount of years just as in dogs?

it would seem this would be a good idea for people in ancillary type jobs. Animal foster care Wild live rehabilitation Or just Dumb doo doos who take in lost critters... Like ME.

Duh I just read again. "their products Bones skin, fur...." Um.... LIKE ME...

Thanks SGC

When I used to breed dogs many years ago, England was considered rabies free. I sent 3 dogs there over time, they still had to have rabies shots (which they did) and be in quarantine I believe it was 6 mos. Rough on dog and importer ($$$$$$) I always thought rabies would show up MUCH sooner than 6 mos. Remember how fast "Ole Yeller," came down with it?

Deb if you continue to be high risk (lab workers that test for rabies) you can have the lab draw your blood and do something called a "titre" to see how immune you are after a few years have gone by after you got the shot series. If the titre dips, one can be given a booster dose (or two, or three) but this is very infrequent and there's not good data on it. Keep in mind if you're exposed and vaccinated you still get treatment, just not as much as those unvaccinated.

Titres were run on my Horse when we were trying to diagnose him. So I am familiar. And I dont plan on getting involved again.

Thank you Shell Shocked, around here (USA) no one believes me when I say squirrels, raccoons, fox, bats, etc. can carry rabies. They think I am paranoid. One friend lived in a condo not far from here, they had dying and dead bats laying in the hallways. I told her to complain to management and animal control. She just laughed. Weird. We live in a forested village and loads of wild animals opposums, ground hogs, and oops forgot also coyotes. Folks leave the dogs and cats running lose -not a good situation.
