The Old Folks Home

Microchick, I'm like you I don't water the grass because I don't want it needing to be mowed. Problem is my grass is mainly weeds and crab grass, with some real grass bravely trying to hold on. When I don't water ,the weeds crab grass have a ball and get really tall. They love water but, do great without it. Darn weeds

The guy that used to cut the grass for me didn't bother to tell me he wasn't doing it anymore. He used to come once a month which worked out fine. Never showed up 2016 November.. I didn't think anything about because he would frequently pass up doing November. I had him for 12 years including price increases - some loyalty

We had an extremely wet spring and into early summer. The weeds got as tall as the 42" chain link fence. I left messages asking for him to cut the grass. No reply. But I can see his garage from outside my house. I saw him and called his cell phone. He answered and said he didn't cut grass anymore. He said I should just watch for other guys cutting grass and hiring them.

At any rate I chased down other mowers -5 to be exact- they looked at yard, gave me estimates and said they'd be back later to do the work. 5 different groups and none of them showed up. I asked the guys working across the street from me. One was on a stand up riding mower. The other was put equipment back into their trailer. I asked him if he could tell me how much to have my lawn cut. He said "We don't cut grass." I asked him what why his partner was using the mower. He didn't answer.

Finally got someone who was cutting neighbors grass behind me.He said he'd come and look when he finished. HE actually did show up. checked the yard and told me he would have to go over the yard twice the weeds, etc. were so tall. Fine, charged me $ 100. for the one time. By then I was ecstatic that anyone showed up. But, there went a good chunk of my mowing budget. He said if I wanted it done again had to sign a contract for 2 times a month(the least they accept) at $ 35 a pop. and they cut from April thru Nov. or later if the weather was good. I figured out how much and almost croaked. I just couldn't afford it. I forget, the FIRST time they cut grass under contract is $80 each year.

Soooooo, I got Roundup and sprayed where the weeds would be the worst. That kept them in check for most of the summer. In fall I saw there was a new Roundup that allegedly killed weeds but not the grass. Yeah right. I used it at the back of the yard where actual grass was growing among weeds. It killed all the grass there - in fact that area is still devoid of grass. Didn't even wilt any weeds.

Okay that is where things stand for this year. Thankfully we have been having serious cold spells and the grass hasn't started yet. But, I can see the crabgrass etc. coming up just fine.

I have been told my backyard Treezilla(Sycamore) is dying- the leaves have been getting smaller for a few years now (tree is 45 years old) - I'm also afraid it will fall- it would take out at least the bedrooms and bathroom ( bi-level house) and maybe worse. The lowest quote I got was $ 2420. because I turned down an extra service, I don't need. Tree seems much more important to me than the weeds & grass.

Times sure have changed. Teenagers used to go door to door asking to cut lawns. That was ages ago. They are well heeled now and don't need to break a sweat.

Sorry for all the ranting -just can't figure out how I am going to take care of the $$$$.I usually rant and rave and make myself ill over things, then have a good cry and carry on. Finished the good cry, so hopefully I will come up with something.
