The Old Folks Home

Morning all. Off for bone density test today then do some shopping. Went to bed last night it was 82 degrees. Woke up to the stark reality of 50 degrees. Does that a lot here this time of the year. Hot one day and cold the next.

Our oldest cat is 19 and still going strong in spite of his history of being diabetic. He has been off insulin for 2 years now. Next oldest is 11 and my spoiled baby and the youngest are 6. Our border collie is 14.5 and slowing down. She has arthritis and is deaf but still putters around the yard. Doggo with DM is 10 and continues to decline at a sharp angle. Our youngest are 5 and keep us active. DH keeps asking me if I want a puppy and in all honesty my biggest worry is with the trio of arthritises, being able to care for it. I have the chickens to keep me active. Guess a puppy would do that also but I worry about what's down the line 10 years for me.

Thanks @ronott1 for the kind words. Having friends decline and pass on just reminds a person of their own mortality. This friend has been battling parkinson's disease for 20 years or more so not unexpected. Just very sad.

SGC very impressive spinning wheel. I've always been fascinated by them.

YES, Tara and her lllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg posts. I even went back and re-read most of them. I miss the dogs the most

There's a somewhat rude abbreviation TLDR - "too long, didn't read" that you sometimes see on forums. I tried, honest I did, because I really want to learn chicken genetics, but Tara's ramblings put me to sleep (I have sleep issues). I remember her saying she had a wider audience on Facebook, so I'm not surprised she is no longer posting here. With all the other stuff she has in her life, I don't think there are enough hours in the day to post like that in two places!

Many years ago, I spent a few months doing spinning and weaving demonstrations at one of the local historic homes while the weaver was on maternity leave. Having always been a quick study, I was given a crash course by the weaver. I was nowhere near expert level, of course, but I was good enough for demonstration purposes; most folks aren't really there for more than a brief overview, anyway. At the time, I had a sheep and some angora rabbits, and when a friend heard that I knew how to spin, she gave me a wheel that she had floating around in her attic. It had bits missing or broken, and I could have bought or made the parts to make it functional again, but I've just never gotten around to it.:idunno

My pets are all senior citizens now. 16 year old cat with hearing loss and kidney issues, 12 year old blind, deaf and now possibly Cushing's syndrome Blue Heeler, and a 10 year old Dachshund who is in perfect health but hears only what he wants to hear. And my legacy 11 year old miniature Schnauzer who is loosing his hearing as well, and has some arthritis (and he is a deadly chicken killer) - Mom's dog who came to live with me when she passed.
My BF is also pretty hard of hearing - see the trend?

My 2 yo granddaughter began trying to use the potty a short while back. We bought her Pull Ups.

Yesterday, grandpa took her with him to visit the neighbor. They are professional dog trainers, and had their new dog out. The grandbaby, and the dog played together for a good while, and had a ball together. After they played a good bit, the dog began to poop in the yard. Grandbaby pulled down her diaper, and pooped right alongside the dog, then pulled up her Pull Ups, and she and the dog continued playing. Everyone thought it was hilarious. The neighbor got the pooper scooper and cleaned up both piles. Sheesh!

Dh went to see his Dr yesterday.
Dr. Told him of a new procedure approved by the FDA. They discussed using artificial disks to replace his 4.
But that will require 2 surgeries.
Another surgeon will open him from the front and put the disks in. Then he will have to have a CT scan. Then wait a day before his Dr will open his back with a 4" incision and put the plates and screws in.
This way he won't have to cut through the muscles in his back. And the healing time take a 1/3 off.
Since April he's had more severe damage to the disks.
Dh did some reading up on the procedure and was not very happy with the reports on the artificial disks. But he's already told the Dr to schedule his surgery. The Dr said he's already pretty booked up so it will be a while.
And the two Drs have to coordinate the surgery together. I asked if it would be by the end of the year and they said yes.
And blue Cross is making them appeal every surgery.
:fl

A lot about that type of back surgery depends upon the condition of the patient. It sounds like your DH is in fairly good shape given the work he does so the recovery should be good for him!
