Interesting evening last night.
Since we went on grid with electricity 6+years ago now, we have never lost power. They put in tri-phase wiring on our road due to the fact that somebody not around here wanted to put in a hog confinement and they decided to put in more powerful wiring all over the area. Funny since at the time this area was mostly Amish and everyone knows it's a sin to flip a switch.
Anyways, we have had incidents where the power has flickered but last night, during a severe thunderstorm. Our power went out.....go figure. The one time I have 7 eggs in the incubator one due to hatch hopefully before tonight (prolly won't but I'm giving it every chance) and 6 more due to hatch on Tues or Wed, and the freakin power goes out. I invented a few new swear words to add to my growing list and DH kept telling me to 'wait for it! It'll come back on any second'
Seconds turned into minutes and finally he said kind of seriously 'better check your incubator temp'. Sure enough it was steadily dropping. We waited a bit longer. I think I was mentally figuring how long one of the hens would stay off the nest at this stage of development and when it surpassed that time I told DH that we had to make a run for the coop and stick the eggs back under the broodies before they chilled. It was still lightning, thundering and raining but the worst of the storm had passed. But out we went with my precious cargo bundled in a soft towel and hay lined basket.
Bless those little girl's hearts they obligingly let me take the fake eggs away from them and stuff a couple of eggs under each one. Cooler weather through Thursday here so the eggs should hatch without problems.
Lights came on about an hour later but I'm leaving the eggs with the broodies.
Good news! Caught a raccoon! It was a juvenile. Too young and stupid to even be afraid of me. I almost felt sorry for it as it's a lot easier to off them when they are spitting and biting at you.....I said almost. Heading out now with the tractor to transport the remains out to the lower 40 for the vultures.
Since it was a juvenile I'll be setting the trap for awhile and making sure no siblings are around.
