I have watched too many apocalypse movies...

I read "giant magnet" and start envisioning all birds and sea creatures smashing themselves against walls....

The answer to your question is summed up in a few words.. Vaccinations and Extruded food that are fed to our dogs now. Both have the result of shortening a dog's natural lifespan.
 
'Peg' has arrived. Sandra waited until she came to the porch to roost on her cooler and brought her to me. I have a 3 step plan to integrate her into the flock of pullets her age. 1) shes in a large wire dog crate on top of an upside down next to the roosting area in the big round pen. 2) I will keep her there until Saturday morning. The rest of the girls have 'free time' tomorrow, but there is constantly one of the pullets or other in the big pen to lay, or snatch a snack or something. Then when they go in tomorrow evening they will roost again with her still next to the roosting area. 3) Saturday morning, I'll open the door to her crate and let her mingle at will. If she needs she can jump back in the crate, since the others wont.
Hopefully this will reduce the stress of being in a new place and integrating into the flock. She's never been around a flock before. Oh, and she's a GLW, not a BCM. Surprise!
 
Australian Cattle Dogs are known for their longevity. Not unusual for them to live 20 years. I thought I had miss read that till our UPS guy was here one day and our 4 idiot canines were barking their heads off at him. We tried to talk him into taking 2 or 4 of them home with him and he said nope, the one he has keeps his hands full and he is 19 years old and going strong.

My husband looked over at our heathens and said 'you mean they could be around when we are in our mid 80s?

Yep. Sure could.
