CHAPTER ELEVEN
"Show yourselves, intruders of the forest!" were the first roaring words that greeted Delta upon her return to camp. She had been out and had a long, beautiful day in the forest, dustbathing under the sun's golden rays and stopping to peck up any passing insects, the unfortunate grubs.
She rubbed her eyes with the large feathers on her wing, and shook the dust out of her pores. BrightFlight was on the alert, peering around through the vegetation. He growled in a threatening manner, but whoever it was had disappeared.
On an island, far out to sea, two weary chickens pulled themselves onto the shore. The sun beat down with a warm, welcoming heat and the sand shone with a strange radiance. Palm trees stood grandly a little up the coastline, while behind them bloomed a lush, undisturbed forest broken only by tropical bird calls and the chip of cicadas.
One was SandStar, the other her friend of a long time, PearlFeather. Both were hens of a stratling white shade, and they barely even stood out from the fine sand. Two spots on the pristine beach, they looked at each other incredulously.
"What is this place, say?!"
"Finally, we see some land after all that flying. I was about to drop dead."
"And I think I'm about to drop dead after all at the beauty of the island."
"We're calling this home then?"
"It can hardly be called ValleyClan anymore."
"Well yes, most of the members were killed..." PearlFeather's face flashed a look of nostalgia. "We'll have to start all anew."
Something barrelled into the sand next to them. It was a pullet, barely full-grown, a dirty yellow shade with barred feathers. She could hardly be called pretty, but she had a quirky little tail which many thought made her look cute.
sandStar shrieked and jumped up, crashing into PearlFeather.
The pullet giggled. "Hi! Sorry if I frightened you!"
"That's quite all right..." Pearl began. "I apologise if we're intruding on your territory."
"Territory? What's that? Don't we all live together?"
Sandstar frowned at Pearl. "No, hun. Where are you from?"
"The city. I lived in a park where humans fed the group of us."
Sandstar and Pearl exchanged another glance.
"Well... I'm afraid we do things a little differently out here. We have to take care of ourselves - there is nobody to feed us around here."
The pullet looked around. "You're quite right! This place is absolutely deserted!"
"Not QUITE," said a mischievous voice from behind her. [ui]Another[/i] white hen, why, the sun here must bleach their feathers!
"CoxPaw, nice to meet you."
The pullet smiled. "Hi! I'm SkyLaine."
"SkyLaine... why it has a ring to it."
"Most of my friends in the park called me Laine. it's less troublesome to say."
PearlFeather decided to pitch in. "I'm PearlFeather and this is SandStar - "
CoxPaw's eyes widened. "You're ValleyClan's leaders!"
SandStar laughed bitterly. "We're not only Valleyclan's leaders, we ARE ValleyClan."
"What?!"
"There was an invasion. A lot of us were killed, some managed to escape, but we haven't seen hide nor hair of them for weeks."
"I'm sorry."
"No need to be - our time was up. Our systems were failing, I guess we neede a fresh start."
Suddenly, PearlFeather's eyes flashed with inspiration. "and that is why, my friends, I welcome you all today to OceanClan!"
"Pearl! You're a genius!" SandStar exclaimed.
"That's a nice name," Laine piped up, not really understanding anything that had gone on just then.
CoxPaw smiled. "Well, okay, I'll try to explain. Here we live in groups called clans, and each clan owns a piece of land for their use called the territory. Entering another's territory without permission is considered an offence."
Laine frowned. "Why can't everyone just get along?"
"it's not that - there are too many of us to stay all in order if we exist together. Originally, the one group split to share rank duties, then gradually the two halves became competitive, and that's how it's got to the stage it's at today."
Pearl and Sandstar excused themselves to begin scouting for a suitable location for a camp. CoxPaw led Laine towards the forest. "I've been here as a loner for a while. There are a couple on this island. I'll show you around."
As if on cue, another gleaming white hen stepped out from the trees. Laine's eyes were beginning to swim with all the white feathers. However, as the hen lifted her wings, Laine saw thick black streaks on the undersides.
"SnowFeather! Meet Laine."
"Hey..." Laine said uncertainly.
"Are you a loner too?"
CoxPaw cleared her throat. "actually, Snow, we've just had two leaders of Valleyclan arrive after an... incident on the mainland. They're starting anew on the island. Me and Laine are already in. Laine's from the city."
SnowFeather didn't know which pressing issue to address first. Finally, she picked the most shocking one. "The CITY? My, my! Laine, you've got a lot to learn out here."
She turned to CoxPaw. "And I don't see why not. Me and you have had the island to ourselves for a long time now, it was about time someone new came to mess things up!"
CosPaw laughed. "Well, everyone. Welcome home!"
