The Olive-Egger thread!

I hatched some eggs from her black Ams.

Oh sheesh - for some reason, I though you meant you got juvies from her or something! HA!

Wynette, she got them from me when I offered my test hatch to test my shipping skills and fertility. At that time the roosters were together, now they are separated.

Hey Deanna, welcome to the OE thread. My blue girl is the same coloring as the blue girl on your website. They look great BTW! I'm not so patiently awaiting the first eggs from mine!

Wynette, I will try to get a picture of mine the next time I get one but I have a welsummer hen that lays a nice speckled dark egg. If you are interested I would be happy to share with you at the next MI chickenstock.

That nicely speckled egg on the right is from Rusty. Sold to me as a Barnevelder, but it's obvious from her colouring that there's a fair amount of Welsummer in her breeding. Here she is. I've decided I don't really care if my Barnies conform to breed standards. I'm not selling them as show stock anyways. And I love their eggs.

Thanks! I'm glad that I found it. I just love BYC...I've learned tons and made new friends...win/win situation. I really can't wait for the eggs either.

I must say that I am totally disappointed that I lost my OE cockerel night before last. My husband shut up the coop in the dark, and he was stuck in between the door and the blocks (threshold). I was so upset...such a weird mishap!!!

I imagine that I can put a BCM roo with them (surely I'll have a roo hatch from one of the four eggs I have in the 'bator now.) Do you think that would help to improve the egg color?

Oh no! I'm so sorry! Poor guy.

It all depends on the coloring of the egg the pullet lays. If it turns out to be a light olive, then you can cross to a BCM to darken it up. I know Wynette crosses twice to her BCM to darken the olive coloring. If Ford is the father of one of them, it's anyone's guess what they will lay. Guess we just have to wait and see.

It should be noted that only 50% (statistically) of the peeps from this crossing will carry the blue egg gene. Some of these amateur Olive Egg breeders are really upsetting people when their expectations are not met, that's all.
