The Olive-Egger thread!

Oh wow! Beautiful birds!!! Ok that's what I was leaning towards! I think the lighter birds will be a fun project! I am really excited about breeding the white Marans with the 2nd generation olive egger that is wheaten and barred! I think they could give me some beautiful OEs!! Might end up with a very dark olive egg layer as well! I need to do a lot more research on breeding. Looking forward to this project and I have loved looking through this threads pictures!

I have Three types of OEs

The two Black ones are Marans X EE . The one on the right is a Partridge Pene and the white pullet is a Bresse

This is a Crested Cream Legbar x Crele Penedescnca(Juststruttin) on the right and the Splash pullet is a Barnie OE.

This is a better picture of the Barnie with Two of the CCl X CP Olive Eggers.

One of the CCL X CP pullets laid a first egg yesterday:

I'd love to get some opinions on my 9 week OE, "farrah fawcett". The wattles developed early so I thought roo but the comb hasnt grown much. And no dark red patches on the wings.

I hope its a girl so she can keep her name!

So glad I found this thread. We are planning on starting our olive egger project next spring from the breeds we just recently hatched. I would love to hear your opinions on which Rooster we should keep for this project. They are all still young but so far it appears we have a white Marans boy, and a 2nd generation Olive Egger boy (looks like a black Australorp as a chick).
The hens it will be over are...

2 lavender/blue EE's- from blue eggs
2 dark brown EE's that are already laying and lay a light blue and light green egg.
1 black ameracuna- from a blue egg
1 white marans girl
1 2nd generation olive egger- looks like it will have a barred wheaten coloring

I think it would probably be best to keep just one Roo. Do any of your have opinions on which one would be best to keep for the project? We would like to produce some pretty birds with pretty eggs in a variety of olive colors. There is no one in our area with olive eggers and I think with the popularity of keeping backyard chickens we could make a little money on this.... at least enough to cover a bag of feed or two.

Thanks in advance!
any pics of the 2nd gen olive egger? what comb does it have? I say use that if it has a pea comb and then maybe maybe keep the white marans as back up unless you want to know what you started with then go maybe white marans over your black ameraucana back to your marans .. do you know what was used to make your easter eggers? maybe another way to go

Well they are still pretty young but I will try to get pics of the 2 2nd Gen OEs tomorrow. So far it looks to be a pea comb on him. It's really too young (3 weeks)for me to be guessing gender but I have a pretty good feeling based on who is standing tall and who is running scared, I think.
I have no idea what my 2 old EEs are made up of, they were hatchery extras. My two I just hatched are from a splash A and black Orp. I know the olive egger chicks have BCM in them because that is what the breeder I got them from was using. We would really only like to keep one Roo, just for the noise issues. So white bird from chocolate egg, or black bird from an olive egg?

I keep leaning to the white Marans for coloring but the OE for egg color. I tend to like the greener olive eggs than brown. Clearly I'm confused! I need to read more on genetics!

Sorry I am just getting back! Here is what I have going on with my to 2G Olive Egger chicks...

This is the one I am guessing is a Roo- Total Guess though.

And here they both are...

And here is a full shot of the one I am guessing is a girl...

This is the white Marans Roo...

If it helps you any, here is what we have hen wise...

1 yr olds- a speckled sussex, a buff-orp, 2 dark colored EE's, a Delaware, a Barred Rock and a Plymouth Rock
Chicks (2-5 weeks that are looking female)- 2 blue/lavender EE's, a black Australorp, a silver laced wyandotte, a white marans, a black orpington/RLBWyandotte mix, a Rose Comb RIR.

Let me know what combos you think I should try for. I want this to be a fun project but really do not know where to start.

My thoughts were keep the white Marans Roo, work for darker eggs over time with the White Marans hen. At the same time have the white Marans Roo over the EE's and the 2G olive egger to get more olive eggers.

Or.... Keep the 2G Oliver Egger Roo and breed him with the EE's and 2G olive egger to get more varieties in the green eggs.

I think I understand the egg part but not the "how to get a pretty bird" part.

Hello all Ohio here. Just hatched 8 Olive Eggers with my first broody hen. The chicks are 3 weeks!
I was told recently that the males get their tale feathers later than females?
Only have owned chickens for just a year.
