The Olive-Egger thread!

lol, I am thinking the exact same thing - Your eggs I have hatch on that day.

I really would love to see how your new Olive Eggers turn out. Sadly I don't have neighbors like that. . . We're the only chicken people for 80 miles, and even past that, the people only have "Americanas" and "Black Ostrolopes."

Thanks, Kelly! You can bet ya'll will be hearing about them!

Illia - my friend lives a full two hour drive away...but for an exciting experiment like this, it's so worth it! I'm already wondering if the pullets would be laying by fall....sad, eh?

Sad indeed even for me - Because, take for example - My Olive Eggers won't lay until, umm, Spring? Summer? - Of next year.

Their parents aren't even two months old yet.

And in the mean time I cannot wait until my Araucanas start laying - So far they are my only true blue layers - I have 8 Ameraucanas from a line who should give a pale blue, but who knows. . . I've never seen a good enough image to tell.

One thing I can't wait to do is make all the shades and hues of Olive Eggers I can!! I have several lines/egg darknesses and hues of Marans, and several lines/egg colors of Ameraucanas with the Araucanas included, so with all those. . . I'll be making a LOT of Olive Eggers, and I bet each one will have a completely different shade and hue of "Olive" coloring.

With most barred colored birds the big white spot generally means roo but I wouldnt say 100% but I'm guessing a very high percentage has the big white spot.Female's can have a small white spot but generally the big spot is roo's.Can anyone else help with this? Maybe you Patty?

I'd love to hear if anyone has tracked the percentages on this. I've thought about it but I'm very doubtful of a correlation as the black sexlink males will have anything from a nice small, well defined dot to a big, white blob.

Well I can tell you I SWORE my barred f1 was a hen, small spot, black splash up the legs, flat comb... then she crowed at me a few days ago

I thought she was going to be my f1 hen....

I love this thread! I just bought a rooster and hen that are the product of a cross between an Ameraucana rooster to a Buff Orpington hen. The crossed hen is laying a dark olive colored egg. Absolutely beautiful. I currently have them in a dog cage getting ready to introduce them to my 15 pure bred Buff Orpington chickens. I can't wait to see what the babies will be like.
