The Olive-Egger thread!

I'm so excited!

I hatched 4 babies last week (EE roo x sexlink hens that lay dark brown eggs), hope I have some girls in there!

Curious to see if they will lay olive eggs in 6 months!

Oh... and they are SOOOO CUUUUTE!!

Love this thread...love olive eggs!

My EExBCM's eggs have lost their darkness after a couple of months,
just like the Marans do. They are still pretty, but more of the blue is
showing through. They are now more of a soft, sagey, color:

I have eggs in the bator now of the Olive egger crossed with an Olive Egger roo,
and a BCM crossed with the same Olive Egger roo for F2 chicks, and a few eggs of a
Wheaten Ameraucana roo over a BCM and a Welsummer for more F1 chicks.

Can't wait to see what the offspring lay...it's all about the egg color...

It really all depends on the hen. I've bought layers that laid in the box on the drive home, and the next day and next, not missing a beat. I've also had a few that took a good two weeks off before starting back up, just from being moved from one pen to another, right on my own property! So, it all just depends.

cpartist: Oh, how NEAT! That's one thing I've not done - cross olive eggers to each other. I'm excited for you!

Okay guys quick question, i have crossed my wellsummer roo and my cuckoo marans roo with my EE girls. Will I hatch out olive eggers? And can I sex the chicks at birth by their coloring from my marans? Thank you! I am SO excited about having olive eggers!

The best possible scenario to get the prettiest olive colored eggs is to find the very darkest laying hen you have (or a roostert hatched from a very dark egg) and cross it to a blue or green egg layer. What I seem to be finding is that the pullets from my blue-egg laying EE crossed to my Marans rooster (hatched from a TRUE "8" egg) lay a medium olive green. Then, I breed them back to the Marans rooster to get an even darker shade of green.

Yay!!! We got our first Easter Egg!!!

I thought maybe she would take a few days before she started laying again after being moved. We live a couple of towns over from where we got her (and I'm not the best driver), so it was a rough ride for them.

Anyways, here is a pic of our first egg. I put it next to one of our BO's egg. They are exactly the same size, but it looks bigger because the bigger part of their butts were facing in opposite directions. Not sure if that makes sense or not. And I'm sorry the pic looks so blurry. I took it with my cell phone. The lighting from my kitchen also makes the eggs look a lot lighter/brighter than they do in person.

On the down side, because I almost returned them for fear of having a rooster around my baby and the only reason they are still here is because of my 13 yr old son, he has informed me that the rooster, hen and all of her beautiful eggs are his.
