The Olive-Egger thread!

Quote: It's a useful chart--not as simple as it looks. THe dark egg layers, marans, can vary in intensity of paint, ie cuckoo v. wheaten v BC. And the brown layers vary from a cream to a medium red-brown. SOme blues, are intense, some more pastel, some a bit green. Anticipating hens to lay is very interesting indeed.

I am so OCD.... I know who lays what. Since I have a limited flock #, I have one of each breed (except Ameraucanas & EEs).... I put up a camera in the hen house pointing @ the nest to see who laid what. Sat in the living room & waited until one left & went to collect it up!! Then if a gal is not "up to par" helping me get those pretty rainbow dozens, I rehome her with a 4Hers flock so she can be spoiled & I can have the exact hens I need..... So between my Welsummer, Cuckoo & Blue Copper Marans gals, I know who's my trophy dark layer! & I know all the Ameraucanas' & EEs varying shades.... of course I HAVE to keep a collection to oo & ahh at!!

IDK how people could NOT want to know (as I need to know)... LOL Some call my OCD: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, others refer to is as Obsessive Chicken Disorder, since I use my flock to give me something to organize, control & am constantly making modifications to improve efficiency. I figure it is now not OCD, its mutated into OCCD!!! hehe

Ha! I can identify 95% of who lays what in my flock too. Everyday, I check off on a chart who laid an egg, plus a running total for that day. I used to graph the totals too, but that got too complicated when I kept adding new chickens. The chart tells me that my golden cuckoo Marans, who is perpetually broody, has been sitting since May 28. My Buff Chantecler has been sitting that long also.

The best way to know how the gals are is by their egg laying. So easy to know who is not feeling 100%, even if it's just bc they are starting molt... and to know who lays what is the absolute best!

WOW!!! What a beaut! wish I had one like this in my flock. I love barred chickens and they usually lay huge lovely brown eggs. Thanks for sharing the pic. Regards, The Lady

I am hatching out some olive eggers crossed with my crested Icelandic's. will be neat to see what they look like. icelandic's lay white eggs. my olive eggers pretty dark so maybe breed these back to something dark like my penedesenca or empordanesa?

Wait and see what color the eggs are to decide. Remember when they are breeding age you will have pullets and cclks--and BOTH can be used for breeding!!
