I have a special place in my heart for my White crested Black Polish flock! I kept them about 14 years and they mostly all died of various age related issues at about 9 to 10 years, some longer, 12 to 14 years old. The most distinctive and friendliest chickens I ever had! Hardy, quiet, cute, productive, medium eggs and cheap to keep! They layed reliably for years, longer than any other chickens I ever had and would make perfect pets that lay good white medium eggs AT A GOOD RATE(about 4- 5 per week) for 3 years! They slowed down after three years but still lay two or three a week till about 6 to 8 years old(not in winter as older girls)Even the splendidly handsome Roosters did not crow overly much or hurt the girls ! I kept them with Houdans most of that time, whom they got along with splendidly, but out lived about 5 years on average. They did not do well with RIR's or Barred Rocks and had to be separated as older chicks due to bullying and cannibalism from the larger and sharper sighted birds! They(the Polish) would sit around my feet and nuzzle my hand waiting /looking for treats. I might get them again! So many chickens, so little time!

Might be controversial, but I will never trim their crests.
Just wondering why?

My frizzle polish wouldn't be able to see properly if I didn't and I think that would be cruel of me. Plus her feathers poke into her eyes. She also has a beard and muffs so full face fluff!

My smooth feathered polish don't need any sort of trim. Nice neat pom pom.

I feel if you don't want a polish to have a crest, you shouldn't get a polish. It's my job to keep them somewhere safe where the crest won't cause problems, and I fulfill that.

But I know other people here love theirnpolish and trim feathers and I won't berate them for it

Interesting. I figure that humans have bred them to have faults. Like dachshunds, or pugs. So we should mitigate the hardship caused by the fault iyswim. Polish of 100 years ago didn't have a debilitating sized crest. We've bred it into them bigger.

I guess you use your judgment, but if an animal was suffering (not saying yours are) then I couldn't not help them live a happier life. Its the same as trimming an excessively long toenail that might get caught in something.

I felt the same when I first got the Crested breed. But, when they run into things, can't find their food and scare easily I had to get the scissors out. Afterwards, I feel like I liberated them again.
Attached is an older picture of one (Becky) before she received her first hair trim. Lol. The second picture is after a trim so she can find and eat her favorite treat...Grits!!! Lol
She can't get enough Grits! Lol
She is older now and currently raising 8 three week old polish chicks. I'm so happy she can "see" her chicks and be able to "see" to protect them from other Hens that try to get her baby chicks.
