Haven't seen hide nor hair of Walt lately...is he doing the shows right now?

I'm just finishing up this bachelor/breeding pen for The Rock and will be putting him there tonight. It's just temporary until I can finish the coop expansion and breeding situations. He'll be cool and sheltered and have good visual of the whole place, so he should be fine there. Hope to get the coop done by the end of May.

There are as many bands and opinions of those bands as Carters has liver pills.

Too many opinions for an open forum to be genuinely helpful. I sometimes see a topic go on and on for pages on something and I wonder if the new folks just end up in ball of confusion. I suspect.

Find someone you trust and who has experience and send them a private message and the information will be much more helpful, imho. Like many things, having a mentor or mentors is helpful beyond words. Forums only work so well in discussing things so we all do well to take that into account.

You're showing your age Fred. Carters doesn't make Liver pills anymore or do they?

I haven’t shown poultry in a few years, but because of my earlier off the cuff comment; I don’t want anyone thinking I am bitter towards the APA or showing poultry. Quite the contrary. I think anyone serious about breeding heritage poultry should enter their birds in a poultry show and if possible, join a local poultry club. After all, where do the Master Breeders hang out? Where can you get a poultry judge to examine your birds and after the show, when asked, explain why he/she placed your birds the way he did? Where will you find rare breeds of poultry? Where will you find that mentor that can handle your birds in person and give you their opinion and good advice? Not an internet forum, but this is a great forum.

Look up how to wash birds for a show. Join the NPIP if you haven’t already. Most of the pictures in this thread are anything BUT embarrassing, so don’t be intimidated. Over the years I’ve had 5 master breeders of Plymouth Rocks as mentors, including an APA judge and 2 Plymouth Rock Hall of Fame members and I once clerked for another and got advice from yet another. I didn’t meet a single one on the internet. One thing I can guarantee, these folks LOVE talking about chickens.

The first generation back to the beginning of the Stukel line, so to speak, is a week old. I love seeing the yellow legs on the three barred ones. The blacks show yellow toes, at least, LOL. Dottie is an excellent broody.

I check all my toe punches at one week and repunch any that are trying to grow back. Sometimes I can't get the little peice of skin off when I do them the first time. So far none have grown back after the second punch

I was doing the same thing last year. Punch right out of the incubator then check in a week and repunch if necessary. So far I like the wing bands. I only had one chick so far that lost one. Probably from me being a beginner at applying them.
