A whole box of their eggs. Should be March? LOL Wanna help choose their sire?

With success like that, who am I to choose. Boy do they look nice!!!

"Freakin' big heads"....nice legs/spacing, would ya look at the length of their backs at such a young age!!! And the coloring is pretty darn good too (from a non-barred breeders opinion, LOL)

Pssssst. I'd value your input on the cockerel to put over them. I'm down to two, maybe three selections. Only one is even close to ready to judge.





As you can see, the first is too young to judge, BUT.... he has a proper comb, which is of key importance because we had way, way too many cockerels show up this year with rear floating combs.
Second, He got the good baring I need on the next go round. He's got a tail, for a young fella and that's pretty rare in these Barreds sometimes. I also like his back, although not as much as the guy in the second photo. I like the second guy, but he's "different" than the first younger cockerel. They share a sire, but came from different mothers.

Well ok then.....let's let the females finish and pick the K that best compliments what you want to improve in them next season. Sometimes I find that I pick a bird that is a little "off" the best SOP bird, simply to offset some traits in the females (or vice versa)

I'm feelin' ya.

Thus, I'd like to tighten the barring, duh, no brainer. #1. #2, I'd like to discourage rainy day birds with the F2's. #3. I'd like to keep the good virtues of the select pullets and not go backward on their positive virtues. Duh, again. LOL Like anyone wants to go backward. hahaha

With that criteria, this guy gets an early nod.

Here is my #1 choice of K to keep for breeding in December. He is a Jan 2013 hatched bird, so just over 10 months old.

I like his:

Width (chest and back)
Length of back
Leg stance
FREAK Big Head (comb is ok too)
Wing Carriage

I don't like his:

Loose feathering (still a work in progress, but getting better)
He has a few stubs between his toes
Color still has a way to go

....and I pray that his tail finishes

Any thoughts/critiques/advise? Things I might have overlooked?? (VERY thick skinned here so no negative comments are going to hurt my feelings at all!!)

Scott, I love the teepee, width of rear, on your Rocks. Especially the hen that you've posted pics of. I hope the White Rocks i have ordered look like that. Is that something you've been working on? Or did your original birds come like that? Can we see a shot of him from the top? colburg

Tails have been a bit of an issue from the start. My desktop crashed so I'm not sure I can locate any of my original birds or not (I'll look). Keep pushing leg stance(width between legs) and overall width of back (need to carry it from front to back)...both these things on both the males and the females will straighten out you issue with tails

Marvin Stuckel. Bob put me in contact with him about 2 months ago. Hopefully I'll have them in about a month.

I haven't even seen them, but I figured with Marvin's rep for BR's and Bobs recommendation, I can't go wrong with them.

I had a few Stukel Barreds......WOW, nice birds. You'll be pleased I'm sure

Has anyone gotten to second generation of working Heritage Barred into the Blue Plymouth Rocks? Due to the problems with cross breed contamination with the GSBR's I couldn't get my eggs this past spring. Chomping at the bit to get started with this project but wont even have the "barn to paint" until next year. If anyone has gotten to Blue sire over the blueXbarred hens I'd like to see some photos of grown cockerels or comments on how well type was improved. Is lacing showing in those cockerels? Very curious to see how things are going.
