I've been wanting some White Rocks again. I've been looking for the right strain for the past few years. I'd like a line of Whites that are almost slick and tight in appearance. There is something handsome and athletic looking about that, does that make sense?

I've got to ask Ken Weaver is he likes the feathering on that line he got from Bob Blosl. I'm guessing he does.

I would like to start with something like a White Rock, but the Hawks and Owls are always watchful around here. Doubtful they would last long outside a pen.

Your Barreds look to have tighter feathering than I've seen lately Fred. Your F1 girls (and boy you got rid of)

Here are those three F1s I showed earlier. Just found this pic on my messy desktop. LOL




This was a fairly windy day. I sold the cockerel and the dark legged pullet to a nearby breeder friend, so I know where they are if I need something out of them, one day. I probably gave him the better pullet, but I really wanted him to have a good start.

If you want to see examples of the two lines used in this cross, there it is. The cockerel leans toward his Maine heritage and the pullet, far right, that I kept is very Maine. The center pullet totally reflects her XW/GSBR influence.

Half of my females are tight like that and half are more fluffy. But the fluffier ones are bigger, and are the older females.

I'm really impressed with the chicks I got from the breeder. He just handed me a bucket of eggs (roughly 40) for free when I picked up my two trios (one of which he gave to me because he heard about our fire). My hatchability was outstanding with them.

They do have the Maine line in their blood, but he has been working with them and getting them where he wanted them for years. I know he didn't give me his best trios, but the eggs - all of his barred rocks were free ranging together. I could have very easily got chicks from his best breeders. Fingers crossed!

He only works on that one large fowl breed and variety. That's focus

The bucket of eggs was incredible. THAT was worth the trip. Somewhere within that bucket are some real winners. Can't you just "feel" it? I got goose bumps thinking about it. LOL

Scott, knowing the line of Barred you got your cross from? How can it be anything but good? Putting solid, old fashioned, typey Rock into your Columbians? It has to be a good thing. Here's to hoping it drowns out some of the Brahma, but doesn't create a bunch of new headaches for you. So worth the gamble, in my meek opinion. It's not like the "mistakes" aren't lovely with dumplings. LOL

Sure is nice to see those flashy white birds on a green pasture. How pretty is that?

Scott, knowing the line of Barred you got your cross from? How can it be anything but good? Putting solid, old fashioned, typey Rock into your Columbians? It has to be a good thing. Here's to hoping it drowns out some of the Brahma, but doesn't create a bunch of new headaches for you. So worth the gamble, in my meek opinion. Oddly enough this "green pasture" is a food plot I plant to help keep the deer out of my flowerbeds/garden/etc!! The chickens get a lot of use from it and I just mowed it on Mon evening. Grasshoppers everywhere and its funny to watch the young ones chase them around and around until they finally catch one

This plot stays green even in the winter as it contain clover, chickory, turnips, radishes, kale, wheat and oats

XW poutry has good tight feathered ones(not the 15+ pound broiler X mixed breeds either) I have two growing out here so far they look good as any I've seen on here(with the exception mine get filthy/dirty LOL) you can contact Jeremy or Mrs Kathy they both have the same thing (orig. out of Harrison stocks I believe)

I'm going to be very patient in searching for these Whites. I've been "browsing" for 3 years, so a little while longer won't hurt me. I should finish both strain improvement projects I've got going first. I'm not one to be overburdened with too many birds and too many projects. Lots of folks can keep 6 or 7 breeds going at once. I'm just not one of those people.

I hear that, but I do have 6 or 7 and some side projects in mind (tis the reason I have the number of different breeds/varieties) and yes it can be troublesome and overbearing at times but too my profession(Mechanic) is that almost on every job I get it is the epitome of "Multitasking" LOL

I do concentrate more of my efforts towards my NHs than any of the others but I got them and if/when I ever do decide to carry on with them I think I have good starting points right out of the gate from the selections I maintain.

pictures?(chicken ones esp.)LOL now that's one of the things I'm not too good at and dreadfully anticipate editing and posting (PITA) I have promised to get some of the NH pullets maybe I can get some of the WRs, the BR girls they "ain't" for so much to see now, they look horrendous(like horns before daylight) These slow feathering things are the most pitiful site I've ever seen in molting birds and take forever to do it,(maybe turkens may look the worse but I've never seen a live one of those before) but the BRs are the smartest ones about it, most of my others always always wait till the dead of winter to do so, go figure that one.
