I am just wondering are your rhode island reds mean? I have heard they are mean and scared of people but this could very well be not true.

I've heard that to. My RIRs are super friendly, especially the one in my avatar. She likes to jump on my lap and let me pet her. I guess it just depends on how they're raised and the bird it's self.
