The Rescued Flock (Pictures Included)

I'm leaving the flock alone for a longer period of time today. I have my younger sister checking on them occasionally for me, but I think she may forget. I also found Hot Stuff perched on the edge of the bin- still no lid- this morning, so I took the perch out until I get home.

Those are very kind words! :) Thank you. I surely hope everyone thrives.

I called my sister an hour ago and she surprised me. She said with the good weather she figured it was okay to take them outside, and had them pecking and scratching for thirty minutes before I called. I do believe she enjoys them more than I thought.

That can ONLY be a great thing!

I agree!

Update time:

I came home late and found that everyone was still alive (whew), though their water bowl was pretty messy and dry. I cleaned it out, added a thin layer of shavings, and hand fed everyone. They are getting much better and less skittish as the days pass. I now have almost the entire flock running to me when I place my hand in the brooder. The fuzzy footed babies still aren't quite sure.

I also decided to have another go at feeding them worms. I wanted to take pictures, but I didn't charge my camera, so in a few minutes I'll go in again with a fresh battery. Anyways, the black chick #5 that I suspect is a roo (I believe I will name him Courage. He is the first to warm up and explore new things,) ate three or four worms himself. Everyone else was much more interested this time, pecking and carrying the worms themselves. No one ate any, though. Godzilla and Falcon came closest. The other yellow chick (#9) is starting to feather out on her shoulders. I've decided to name her Lady. Little Chick is the only one left who only has feathers on his wings, though I'm starting to see the beginnings of some tail feathers.

Pictures in a few!

Saying hello to everyone:

Little Chick is getting shoulder feathers!

Beautiful as always

Lady is growing some beautifully colored feathers.

The worm bag. I have at least two hundred saved for the chicks, though at the pace we are going it will last their whole lives.

The worms aren't anything fancy. Just standard red wrigglers you would use for compost. This is the standard size, though they stretch and shrink at will.

A worm! Courage and Godzilla are ready to pounce:

Several worms later, Hot Stuff decides to try:

This is what normally happens. A chick will snatch the worm up, race off, then drop it and stare at it with the whole flock behind them. 'Does she expect us to eat this wiggly thing?'

\

All that chasing is hard work! After ten minutes the flock was ready for a nap.

Plus a video for your enjoyment:
(I'm spoiling you guys with these videos!

I'm thinking of bringing the flock with me to work. I could rig the dog play pen I have with some chicken wire so they can peacefully peck and scratch without the cats/chickens/horses bothering them. It would also be a good chance to introduce them to other chickens. (Not to mention all the pictures!!)

says I cant view video :( how old are your chickens? never thought about feeding mine red worms..been feeding them the meal worms but of course the spoiled things only live will do. the cheap freese dried ones? NOPE! not good enough! LOL

Sorry, I had pasted the wrong link. Glad it's working now, though.

They would be picky little boogers, huh?

Mine seem adamant about trying new treats. They take a while to warm up. Do you chop the heads off of the worms? I heard something about them harming the chicks' stomachs if the heads are left on- kinda freaked me out. I believe the flock is between two and three weeks old.

I didn't with the dried ones. But i heard that it was only the big super worms that would be problems because the meal worms were so small? I think I am going to try out some wax worms tomorrow. they are almost 2 weeks. the red stars will be 2 weeks on Sunday the leghorns tomorrow and the speckled Sussexs were two weeks today. now Sunny, our youngest (she was a replacement for our red star that didn't make it) she is only a week old today.
