The Rhodebar thread!

Last group of F1s are hatching. Ten have hatched, 2 more pipping. Two of the 10 are VERY dark. Will post pics when they dry... Or I know nicalandia will say it didn't happen. ROFL

Quote: I've been going back and re-reading the HRIR project posts. I have two Underwood and one Padgett over Underwood HRIR females. Before I put the Rhodebar cock in that pen, I want to make sure I understand.

This F1 cross will give me all single barred birds that will be sexable at hatch or not? The quote above RE: "F1 sexing even more difficult as F1 Males will not show a headspot when backcross to HRIR" seems to be talking about two things, F1 sexing and BC1 to HRIR, which is where my confusion is coming in.

My intention at this time is to put the RB cock over the HRIR hens and only keep the pullet chicks to backcross to the RB for a one-generation infusion of HRIR. As I understood the many posts, this gives me "improved" RB pullets which are 50% new HRIR. Thanks for your help, again.

Do you mean on the F1 chicks, or pure RB?  Thanks for the clarification...still learning and so far just breeding RB (but looking at the HRIR improvement option).

I mean Pure Rhodebars are better at autosexing than Cream Legbars as the cream legbars SOP calls for a distinctive headspot on females, while this is not the case with rhodebar females, but this only makes the F1 sexing even more difficult as F1 Males will not show a headspot when back cross to HRIR due to this..

the good news is that we can tell the e+/ey or e+/eWh chicks, kee them and keep improving the Rhodebar breed using HRIR stock

Sounds like you've got it.
Your F1s will all be single barred. While they will not be autosexed technically you can figure out the sex pretty early on. You want to mark your chicks that are dark chipmunk. Don't worry about sex at first. Track those dark chipmunk ones. After the first 2 weeks you will be able to begin to tell male from female (although most will be female but not necessarily all). Look for those who develop tails quickest... Those are your girls.
For learning purposes I am tracking all of mine but... It is those darkest striped females you will want to use to breed back to your male RB.
Post pics please. .. We love pics! :)
Also how is the color on your RB cockerel if you don't mind sharing a pic of him...

Niclandia, Penny, et al... If I said or typed anything incorrect here, please jump in.

based on actual F1s posted here(as opposed of the Theorical ones I postulaed) F1s cant be sex at hatch, there is something affecting this, BUT the good news is that no matter how much you go back to Parent HRIR line(to improve type and body, color) you will be able to dected the e+/eWh heterozygotes which is what is the most important factore for me here, Why? because if e+/eWh and pure eWh/eWh looked the same then we would have a horrible time getting the Autosexing e+ into its homozygous state
