It was a bright and warm, perfect day. The sun peeked out from the thick, fluffy white clouds and danced playfully across the vibrant green grass of the farm's pasture. Poppies and other vividly colored flowers opened, soaking up the sunlight that they yearned for so long to have. The breeze swirled through a young foraging hen's sparkling beetle black feathers, she closed her eyes, drinking in the beautiful scene. A tall, handsome Cock climbed up the steep hill to join her. "When do you think the day will come?" He asked her, placing his wing over her shoulder. "Any day now, I know it is." She said, smiling back at him. After some few days, the time finally came when she would try. She climbed into her cozy little nest box and sat, waiting. She fell into a light sleep while waiting, soon awaken by a familiar sensation. She stood up and looked below her, and there sat two beautiful, pearly white eggs. She smiled, and a single tear of joy streamed down her face. "They're here! They're here!" She shouted, and the Rooster came running. "What? Th-They're here? I can't believe it!" He leaned over the nest and examined the two eggs, and he smiled from ear to ear. She sat back down on the eggs and kept them warm, and now she had to wait yet again, this time for the eggs to hatch. The Rooster climbed into the little box, and nestled up in her soft feathers. They both slept and waited together, unable to contain their excitement to the point where sleeping was difficult. Each morning, he would go to catch her some food to eat so that she didn't have to leave the nest to do it herself. Days went by that she did this; wake up, eat, and sleep was the routine. She was asleep one evening when she felt movement under her. She opened an eye, too tired to think much of it. She felt it again before having the chance to fall back to sleep, and finally got up to investigate. The eggs were split in half, and two little black chicks were crawling out of them. They opened their innocent little eyes and looked up at her, and she sighed in relief; she'd been so worried about these two little eggs. She tucked the chicks under her feathers and went back to sleep, smiling, now her mind was dreaming of the beautiful individuals they would grow up to be. The next morning, they were dry and fluffy; ready for their first time out of the nest. She hopped down, with the two little balls of black cotton following behind her. (To be continued.)
