The Sizzle Thread!

I have a smooth sizzle but she is on recovery from being broody and doing a little molt so she is not laying right now. I understand about the brittle feather thing and not breeding curly to curly I was just hoping my fred wasn't true curled. The cutie ashes will go in with mr silkie soon as it is warmer out...what do you do with frizzled silkies are they shown?
Frizzled silkies can be shown as silkies, but smooth and frizzled sizzles can only be shown featherleg AOV. They can't compete against the other birds in the show only agains any other sizzles if there were any.

Hi Painted Feathers! You have a LOT of great info!

How do you get a frizzled silkie? Is it a certain generation silkie x sizzle?
We have 2 sizzle chicks, black skin and 5 toes, they look similar, I posted pics, we have Chicken Nugget and Fredo.
We also got 1 black silkie, purebred, Beak A Poo.
Would we mate Chicken Nugget to a Silkie if Chicken Nugget gets a frizzle gene? If offspring were to be a 2nd generation X would this be considered a frizzled Silkie if it frizzled?
Just curious. We may not allow them to go outside, there are an aweful lot of germs out there, let alone to a show. Only a day and they run up to us when we put our hand in the brooder. We took them out to watch TV with us tonight. They're so snuggly.

You could end up with either of the following varieties: Smooth sizzle, frizzled sizzle, silkie, and frizzled silkie. In theory if nugget is from a sizzle pen he/she could end up as any of the 4. You will find out in a week!

I apologize for my ignorance, but I have a question about breeding Sizzles...

Does mating sizzle to sizzle produce sizzles, or will other characteristics in their genes pop out in the chicks? I'm rather a newbie at all this breeding stuff, LOL so my apologies for being a dork.

I am so happy to have my first Silkie and love him to bits. He is such a character and is being spoiled to excess right now, LOL.

And I know this is slightly off-topic, but in terms of Showgirls- is there such a thing as a frizzled showgirl?

Thanks for any advice and wisdom you can impart.

I don't know if you can mate a sizzle to a sizzle. That's a good ? I'm new at this too. I only found out what a sizzle was about 6 weeks ago. We just lost the rest of our hatching eggs. We were at Day 23, almost 24 and no peeps and no sign of life so we candled them -3- and still nothing. We ended up with 2 Sizzles and 1 Black Silkie. A White Silkie got trapped in the egg and didn't progress. We should've intervened sooner but we didn't in time. Shell was very thick, that one broke my heart because I really wanted 1 white bird. It was perfect too, beautiful bird, perfectly formed with totally absorbed yolk sack!
We don't know what we have yet. We're hoping we got females but who knows. We'll be watching TV with our birds again tonight.

Awww, so sorry to hear about your loss. We end up investing so much time and hope with chicks, especially the excitement of having gone through the wait of incubation etc. It is heartbreaking. But I suppose you will no doubt have future eggs to hatch and i wish the very best to you and your endeavours.

Hi Mollie =) You can breed a Smooth Sizzle to a Frizzled Sizzle, but you can't breed Frizzle to Frizzle. You will end up with a very sickly, bald bird if it makes it even makes it to hatch. You can also breed a Frizzled Sizzle to a silkie and get all smooth sizzles, frizzled sizzles, silkies, and frizzled silkies =). BTW the no frizzle to frizzle rule applies to ALL kinds of frizzled birds, not just Sizzles.

Thanks PaintedFeathers... so it's like when I used to breed Scottish Fold cats. Can't breed fold to fold. Too many defects.

Does the frizzle feathers have an effect on it's insulating qualities? How do they fare in terms of weather extremes?

I've become so enamoured of the "bad hair day" featherd chickens and of course, I'm totally into Silkies now. Since I am a new Silkie roo mamma I am so happy. I hope he will be a good daddy.

Quote: You can breed them together. Only a 25% chance of double dose frizzle. I asked one of the genetic experts (tadkerson), and he looked into the health issues of double dose frizzle. Latest research shows that the only health affect is from the birds not being warm enough (broken missing feathers do not provide insulation). So even that can be negated by proper housing conditions. Diet and housing can also minimize feather breakage and loss.

Note, I am not saying you should or should not breed them together, only that it really isn't nearly as bad as is usually described.
