The Sizzle Thread!

The way it was explained to me is that if the feathers are hard and curly, fluff out in different directions, it's a frizzle and if the feathers are smooth, like a pigeon's it's a smooth. I'm still learning too! Our 1st gen smooth roo and frizzle hen now have eggs. So we can hatch and get 2nd generation, of what I'm not sure, but it's a whole lot of fun!

Usually within a week you can tell if the feathers are going to curl or not. Look at the chick from behind. Thats the most obvious way to see the curling. It can take another 2 weeks to know for sure if its a frizzled silkie or sizzle but I think it's faster determining silkie vs smooth sizzle.

So far of my six sizzle egg chicks, at 8-9 days it looks like two are frizzling. But sizzles or frizzled silkies? I have no idea... I'm so confused!

How do you tell between smooth sizzle and silkie?

Te silkies have the furry like feathers & the smooth sizzles will have "normal" feathers and those feathers won't flip backwards. "Normal" feathers being like most chickens have, such as a non Frizzled Cochin.

Just an example. These 6 chicks are all full siblings hatched under a hen at the same time. Momma is a black sizzle Daddy a blue partridge silkie. Amazing Right?

The red bird is a smooth sizzle. The other three are silkies
The two others are sizzles. The only birds not hatched from this hen are Frizzled Silkies, a curly silkie feathered bird. I am hoping the sizzles bred to a full silkie will bring me that result.

Corrected.

A frizzled silkie is a curly silkie feathered bird. A frazzle is a bird with 2 copies of the frizzle gene. They often have brittle feathers, sparse feathering or bald spots, and have lots of trouble in the cold. You would have to breed 2 frizzles to get it but it sounds like you meant frizzled silkie.

Correct. Sorry it gets confusing.
