The Sizzle Thread!

Pics
Hi, HI. Long time no yammer at... Moved and had to sell all my chickens. It nearly killed me. I am getting more chickens this weekend! Yay.

So... I am going to be truly awful and odd this year. I'm going to raise wheaton marans as pure. But over everything else I am going to cross a silkie roo. This is wrong and evil. And I can't help it. I want to make giant sizzles for my own amusement. I understand I am warped. it's been noted. I loved my sizzles and someone profited majorly from my having to sell out fourth, fifth and sixth generation birds. I can't take any but the wheaton project seriously since I am moving again - this time with my birds, this year, and we have a serious hawk problem. So not going to worry much about anything this year, try not to get too attached and all that. But Sizzles look immensely silly and entertaining free ranging. Face it, that's ridiculous. But man talk about funny. And you know, most of them do quite well if you keep their bangs trimmed. But the whole time I was closetly in love with giant breeds. Fine. Time to play at chickens. If it is for fun, I can do anything I want. LOL. I'm about to be fifty. Not going to be serious minded this year, so there. I'll lose some to foxes and hawks but even the best fences and coops sometimes fail. I'm all in. Anyone got spare buff eggs? I'm going for buffs in my mixes. This should be fun. Or anyone with a buff roo in Northern VA, will get stock silkie if need be, but thought I'd ask? Startup is going to be buff silkie roo, over buff cornish and buff Brahmas. Wee

Well, I have bad news, my only sizzle has died D: I'm looking into getting more, though, but they are hard to come across

They really are smile birds. When I had them I always took one of my pet ones to the bird swaps, they'd sit on my lap or the table and everyone going by would stop in their tracks. What's THAT? Its funny people love them or hate em. Once you like them and you hold a pet one... it's all over. Just touching the poofy curly feathers causes permanent addiction.

I love them, in all their genetic oddness. Frazzles may be short lived and truly odd but they're often deeply sweet little things. The curly silkie feathered juveniles are so darn UGLY. And as was noted on that splash hen, can be truly splendid birds. That splash hen is just wonderful.

I love them and they make me laugh. Working on getting the eggs to hatch to get going again. Still haven't found a local buff breeder to get eggs from. Picking up my wheatons today. be well all.

The nice thing about a breed in development is few have perfect birds :D. Sizzles are fun, perfect or not. Though some here have achieved very nice sets of birds. And when/if they have even a few, spare or old eggs, should PM me. I always have a bator running ;). And as a mad hatcher, do not worry about percentages in old eggs. I've hatched refrigerated, 4-6 week old eggs, muddy eggs, cracked eggs... I consider it a positive challenge to succeed with odd eggs. And I do. So I keep at it. Sure it's nice to have pristine new eggs and 100% hatches. But I feel a little more pride at hatching that cracked egg, etc.

And sizzles are pretty durable little hatchers.

I just have aquick question. I have Sizzle eggs in the incubator right now and I was wodering what would I get if i breed a Silkie rooster to a Sizzle hen? Knowing that the Silkie doesn't have the curly gene.

What type of feathering does your hen have? It can be a Sizzle with Silkie feathering that is why I ask. However if it's a Silkie roo over a Sizzle hen that has the feathering like this...

You should get half Silkie feathered Sizzles and half like the Sizzle in the pic. I'm in the process of hatching out about 60 eggs that was 2 Silkie roos over my 5 Sizzle hens. The first 15 hatch about a week ago and I have a bunch of chicks with the featheringing like the bird in the pic. I think the chicks are 2 days old in this pic.
