The SMELL!!!

I'm going to try soaking my girls food. Last night I had a heavy sweatshirt on an had one chick hanging out on my arm, she pooped on my shirt, I rinsed it then dripped some bleach on it. I hate to say but last night I noticed the smell. All week was damp/drizzly out so I'm sure that hasn't helped.

Eventually you will probably get used to the smell. When I got my first chicks, it really stank in the garage. But now I got used to it and I hardly smell it.

Hope this helps!

Rather than adjusting to the odor, it is more beneficial (to you and, moreover the birds) to identify the cause of the odor and adjust management to prevent it - as pointed out in this thread (and many others started about bad odors) healthy, well maintained birds should not be producing a bad smelling environment.

If you want a great, cheap container for feeding fermented (wet) feed to chicks, an ice cube tray glued to a board to help give it weight, works great. I found that the half inch hardware cloth crimped over the top is a hindrance to very young chicks, so I leave it off until they grow enough to get their beaks down into it. It works great to keep the chicks from wallowing in the food and getting it all over themselves.

My husband is going to think I'm nuts for sure. He already busts my horns for cooking for the dogs. When I start "cooking" for the chickens I just can't imagine what he's gonna say!

LOL - my husband is always making comment about how the "darn chickens eat better than we do" - which is kind of funny given that these comments are made when I am preparing or taking out the *chicken bucket* of kitchen scraps, meaning they are eating EXACTLY the same stuff we do, in fact the cast offs, left overs and food "we" didn't eat..........

Ummm, I'm the hubby and I'm the one that cooks for our chickens! ;-) Every now and then I'll just grab a dozen or so eggs, scramble them, let em cool, then disperse among the coops...They wuv me!!!!! Guard dog gets all people left overs now...
