**The State killed all my friends birds!!**

What kind of license, one like this...

"We are a NPIP approved business. We are licensed as a certified Chick Dealer, Hatching Egg Dealer, and Poultry Dealer."

His birds weren't in bad condition where animal control/spca would have gotten involved, were they?

I can see the license if he was an actual dealer by trade, I guess. If they are forbidding him to have birds again (not just forbidden to sell them), then either the birds were in bad condition or he was the origin or the contributing factor in a serious disease outbreak. Anyway, that's my guess.

Yes this could very well be it

But what scared me so much is i too deal with birds alot
I buy show type bantams and pigeons and i sell them also.
My fear is as i stated above if i sell a bird and it gets sick and it was the new owners fault.
I could take the fall for it and have my birds taken away.

All this scares me

They'd have to prove the bird was a carrier when the new person bought it. That is possible since there are so many diseases that a bird can have and not show symptoms till it is stressed, like by moving to a new home. I never, ever buy birds, period for just this reason. Still, it's buyer beware with that stuff. If they buy birds at all, they take the chance of bringing disease into their flock.

Thanks everyone for your comments i won't be seeing him face to face for a couple weeks then i will know more.
But i'm sure it was like speckled hen said a sick bird was brought in and caused this to happen.
I know the state has tightened their rules and they are now at the flea markets and auctions inspecting the birds.

I still think we are having more and more of our rights taken away.

Yeah, I would suspect some sort of disease in play. My Poultry Professor told me that if a case of New Castle Disease shows up in a flock, all birds within a one mile radius of that bird have to be euthanized. House birds, poultry, everything. She said people who raised birds a while back had an outbreak and instead of having their birds put down, they brought them up north and spread the disease even more. Sucks that he lost his flock, I dont get the whole "never again" deal either, but some disease can stick around for years in the soils like mentioned before.

We only have federal rehab liscencing. I have never had a problem with an inspection although I never have but one or two wildlife critters at a time, sometimes none when they show...which is about twice a year. I only have one raptor 'coop'. Down in the edge of the woods (I like them to be looking out into the woods and away from human contact) and it is made of old scraps we had. Nothing too fancy but it holds the owls and hawks without injuring them. I spray everything down with bleach water in between animals.

I remember once about 6 or 7 yrs ago my husband wanted to buy some chickens (before I even cared about chickens) and he got like 20 of these meat bird chickens. One was sick and the whole flock within a week had this disease that we still don't know what it was. My husband killed them all and burned them. We didn't get anymore chickens for about 4 yrs. after that. I then got some RIR hens from a good breeder and we haven't had a sick chicken yet, except the wry neck one.

I did not know that they could come euthanize others birds within a certain perimeter if someone had a sick flock..even house birds?? That would be awful.

I had inquired about becoming licenses to sell eggs at the Farmer's Market. They require that you register your flock, which simply means that they know that you have a flock and of what (chickens, ducks, geese, etc).

The gentleman told me that if they found a proven case of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) within a certain X mile radius, they would notify me and my flock would be on watch. They would lock down my flock and test periodically to be sure that my animals are not infected. I guess, if they deem it a health risk, they may destroy the entire flock.

As of yet, I am not selling anything other than from my house and I have not registered my flock. Although .... someone in the government knows that I have chickens, becaue I get notices about bio-security and such from the MD Dept of Agriculture.

I follow the SpeckledHen rules of Bio-Security and avoid bringing live birds in to my flock. On the rare occasion that I do, I quarantened for 45 days.

With all that said, I can see why they might have destroyed the flocks, but to say never have chickens again, that is really puzzling.

I see you guys don't like bringing in live birds to your flock. SO you just buy eggs and hatch them? If a parent bird has a disease or something then can they pass it on through their hatching eggs? Educate me...

I have brought in several live birds to my flock. Thankfully no one has been sick but I wanted to go to the sale and check out some more chickens next week. All the birds at our sales always look really healthy to me like people take good care of them so I haven't ever really thought about this......
