The Sussex thread!

I never seen or heard of this breed before. i bought 5 chicks from TSC in March. 2 hens and 3 roos. I sold the roos because I also had 4 silkie roos and kept 1 roo to keep the lone silkie hen company. I like the SS. I would buy them again. They both like to talk, loudly.

Does anyone have the SOP for Light Sussex? Preferably in a free pdf form. I assume this is what would be best to breed Coronations to.

I believe I have a very nice pair to start out with. I would just like to compare them to the SOP and breed to that. I don't think that Coronation is recognized yet, but I think it would be best to stay true to the breed when breeding.

I don't have a SOP in PDF (but would love one!)

But yes if you are going to be breeding Coro's you should be breeding to the APA. One thing i could suggest is try to find a light sussex line that was not bred to aussie sussex.

Just thought I'd come by to say

. I have been raising sussex for two years now, in the lights and coronations. I also have several varieties of Marans and Wyandottes (which I grew up raising), but I am loving the temperament and body type.

Here's a couple pics of mine from my first time showing this breed last fall at the 127th Nebraska State Poultry Show.

Congrats! They are beautiful birds. I didn't think we could show Coros though. I didn't think they were a recognized color. If there is a way to show them I would love to show my rooster.

Thanks! They are rather striking, especially running around on the lawn. On birds that are not of a recognized breed or variety, you can show them, but they will not be able to advance past Best of Variety. The breeds and Varieties recognized by the APA fill the spaces of Best of Breed, Class Champions, and Show Champion. I show both my unrecognized varieties of Marans and the Coronation sussex because it is a wonderful way to get a second set of eyes on your progress from an APA judge. They often will be willing to tell you more, if you respectfully approach them inbetween judging and ask them if they would be willing to answer a couple of questions about your bird and if there is a good time to do so. Its also a great way to promote the breed and variety of birds that are yet to be recognized.

One person to consider is Emily Robertson in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has wonderful Light Sussex which she is improving using population genetics. No Aussie blood.
Best,

The Standard of Perfection is copyrighted. Thus a pdf is not available. There are some older SOP available via google etc.as a free download. The current edition is available at http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/APA_ShoppingMall3.htm

A Coronation could get Best of Breed, if no recognized variety was shown. Otherwise, a non-standard variety can only compete with others of its variety. But it is fun and educational to show non-standard varieties. the judges can look your bird over and compare it to others of its breed.

Ah yes, I forget about that little detail of being able to get best of breed without a recognized variety shown.

Karen, There might be one or two hens in her first flock. I know she hatched only a few chicks from BC that had Aussies. But yah they would be 99% Cad lines

I uploaded this picture earlier in the thread, but I would like some feedback now.

For those who breed Light Sussex and show them, if this guy were a LS how would he compare? I would like to show him just for fun and would enjoy getting into exhibition poultry. I plan on getting Lights in the future, I figured I can learn with my Coro and use that knowledge on the lights when I get them.

Does he have any DQs or faults?
What can I improve on?
Etc...

Thanks in advance for any help. I have never shown anything.
