I never seen or heard of this breed before. i bought 5 chicks from TSC in March. 2 hens and 3 roos. I sold the roos because I also had 4 silkie roos and kept 1 roo to keep the lone silkie hen company. I like the SS. I would buy them again. They both like to talk, loudly.
Hi,
Some fine Speckled Sussex in PA. Google the name and Pennsylvania on the Net. Both Large Fowl and the Bantams.
Maybe some are coming to the Farm Show thuis year. Contact them and see if you can pick some up there.
Buying some grown birds will redeem the time you spent waiting for the Show and put you on track for a nice breeding season next year. To make the best winter layers, Sussex should be hatched in late Feb. and in March. The breed was developed to lay during the winter so the chicks could be hatched in the early Spring. The cockerels would be raised and fattened for the Spring market. That would make the Sussex ready for market before other breeds and they would command the higher prices.

thanks Karen! Been working hard on them and hope to have another good go around at the show this fall with some of the young ones. If I can eek it out, pending all the right birds being in good feather, I'm gonna try to do a display. Just thought I'd clarify on the show. It was the 127th Annual Nebraska State Poultry Show, an APA sanctioned show that the APA and ABA presidents judged last fall.

I uploaded this picture earlier in the thread, but I would like some feedback now.

For those who breed Light Sussex and show them, if this guy were a LS how would he compare? I would like to show him just for fun and would enjoy getting into exhibition poultry. I plan on getting Lights in the future, I figured I can learn with my Coro and use that knowledge on the lights when I get them.

Does he have any DQs or faults?
What can I improve on?
Etc...

Thanks in advance for any help. I have never shown anything.
I am no expert but he is beautiful, and I would love to hear how he measures up :) from a more experenced eye...maybe 4-5 more picts of him from different angles would help people form a better opionion of him for you :)

Just got a 3 month old Speckled from someone local, she is just the sweetest thing

She's a bit skittish when I go to her but once I pick her up she will fall asleep in my lap while I pet her! I don't know if she is show quality, and I noticed what looks like slight wry tail but it could be from my little midget silkie picking on her

she's been messing up all her feathers so if she keeps being a bother I will bring one of them into the house for a while. She also landed on her bum a couple times when she freaks out so I will have to watch it as she grows. Here are some pictures, her name is Evelyn

Well, out of our Sussex eggs we got in a swap, we hatched two chicks. Confirmed today that one is Coronation and the other a Split. They are shaping up nicely. Guess we will not mate them.... they are both cockerels!

We will either sale them or locate a pullet.

Or we could start a Colombian Orpington project!

I have been working on a golden mille fleur sussex project and have some pics of some pullets. These girls are still growing so they should lose the leggy look eventually.

I will post some cockerel pics after they develop a bit more.

Andy
