The Sussex thread!

Yah. Emily has no issue tacking hatching eggs in to the US. I was emailing her the other day ( we email a lot!) She said she has hundreds of birds right now.... They ran out of wing bands at # 200! Her culling should be starting soon. But imagine most of the intensive culling for older birds is being done now. not 100% sure. I got this years breeders and boy ohh boy do i love them! All five of them for the size of them eat very very little. Thrifty buggers they are!

I've got 10 beautiful Cinnamon Sussex babies in my brooder right now, I'm very excited about these chicks, I'll try to get some photos soon.

my two light sussex girls, roughly 6-ish weeks old, made the postal trip from Illinois earlier this week & are now settling in:

such pretty girls!!

Maybe Lakenvelder?
Is this possibly a Sussex? She's @ 10 weeks old and I got her with a batch of day old Spitzhaubens... sure doesn't look very "Spitzies"!

No crest, no spangles, wrong eye color, the neck is kinda "wrong" too. Any ideas? Besides just a very poor Spitz...

With the cooler weather rolling in, I'm finally getting caught up on pics of my stock. Here's my favorite Light girl I caught snooping around in my lumber pile. She's a tank and makes a great broody. I think this last clutch of eggs, she had about 20 under her, no problem. She still growing out her tail from molting, but I love her tankly-ness and has a head that is like a ball.

Here's one of my most white Speckled Sussex pullets, whose 5 months old. I'd definitely be interested in getting hatching eggs in the spring to add genetic variety, since I'm working with 3 bloodlines at the moment. I'm debating whether I want to sell, cull, or keep her, though she is pretty. Its just my others aren't as "white" as her and one of her other sisters are. She is friendly and a good forager, I'm just not sure what to do with her. But glad to see this thread for SS's!

Just my opinion, and please take this with a huge grain of salt since I don't even own a copy of the SOP and am not as familiar with sussex as most others here, but I would probably sell/cull her. She seems to have too slender a build in addition to too much white. My 2 year old SS don't even have quite that much white on them and my understanding (and experience) is that she will get more white with each molt. I guess if you had a roo that was lacking in white then the too much white could be useful to offset that. But something about her type just doesn't seem quite right to me.

I'm thinking about getting light or buff sussex for my flock, but, as yet, I haven't found anywhere in the US to get them from.
Does anybody know of a place where I could get quality Sussex, preferably chicks?
