The Sussex thread!

Pics
I have 6 three - four day old Light Sussex.

Is it just me or are they just so much more laid back than other breeds.

These six are so much quieter than the three chicks of other breeds that just went to the coop. I turn the light off at night and they all lay down to go to sleep with almost no noise.
There is a bit of running around when I put my hand into the brooder but no loud chirping and fear.

Right now I'm testing fertility, to make sure the roos are doing their jobs. They're getting better.

I do have one light pullet in each pen so about 1/3 will be splits.

Beautiful birds. I have a question for you on the laying of the Coronation Sussex. Do they lay as well and are their eggs as big as the Light Sussex?

Being crossed with Cochins (that is what I have read anyway) I was wondering if the eggs were smaller and or less of them. Are their personalities different?

I love my Light Sussex but so far the eggs which I thought were supposed to be large are quite small! And not alot of them. The birds themselves are huge and beautiful but I wanted more than that from them.

I have one little speckled sussex pullet--Freckles is just a tad over three weeks old and my favorite! She's very gentle and likes to be held. Not flighty at all. I'll have to post a pic because she's just beautiful! Wish I had gotten more........

Just wanted to get in this thread Last week I had a great hatch Of 14 light sussex They do seem to be alot more calm than other breeds I've had. All of my pullets are laying an egg a day right now, and the eggs are all about the same size. They're certainly not the largest eggs I get. That honor goes to my smallish black star hen. I don't think that's completely unexpected since the Sussex are from show stock while my best layers are from production (hatchery) stock.

The lights may be a little more outgoing (we named one Nosey) but there isn't a huge difference in personality between the two.

I got some SS eggs free from a friend last year. I really didn't want them intially, but now I am glad I kept them. They are my favorite breed now. I am considering showing a few of them this year. I didn't have any extras to butcher, but they certainly look like they would be a good eating bird if and when I get some extra roos. i just set a dozen of their eggs on Wednesday, so will be greatly expanding my flock this year.

I would like to get some new blood in my flock this year, so if anyone is selling hatching eggs from proven stock, please PM about pricing and where you are located.

Here are a few pics I took the other night:

This is the pullet I think I will show.

They are such great foragers. They are the only one of my breeds that head straight for the woods when they are allowed to free range.
