I have 4 full ones at the moment and i will have to build one to two more before winter! I got my sussex today 3 girls and one big boy. i was approached by someone that wanted to give them to me and i agreed thinking they would be terrible quality, and actually they're not, but i have some work in store for me. i will try to get pictures up tomorrow!

How big are the Light Sussex from Greenfire Farms stock? Every pic I`ve seen, they look enormous or maybe its just the camera angle? How much does an adult roo for example weigh?

Um...I would estimate my 6 month olds at 12lbs or so. Mine are still very immature (not crowing or laying, yet). I've never seen a fully mature one in person so I'm not sure what they would weigh....I could guess 14-15lbs? They need A LOT of room, strong roosts and BIG nest boxes. I just moved some my birds around (3 breeds) so the Sussex would have the largest coop & run I have.

I could weigh mine tomorrow if you really want to know, and measure how tall they are. They're probably about 14 lbs. Even the girls are rather hefty.

However I'm not sure they're that much bigger than the large breed standard birds you see at shows, such as Austrolorps, Orpingtons, etc.

Yes, that's true. If you ever see non-hatchery stock Orps or Australorps...or even Cochins that are show birds--they are about the same size. I did see the biggest rooster I've ever seen yesterday at the show, he was a Langshan. EXTREMELY impressive. I was tempted to get a few chicks (they were $5 each) but then I remembered I'd have to FEED those things! LOL And maybe get another coop for them because they wouldn't fit my current coop!

Can you show me any photos of young speckled sussex (like 8 weeks and younger?) I bought some birds at the feed store on an impulse (shouldn't have) and thought at first they might be welsummers, but then they started getting little white spots on their backs and white chests, and they have pink legs. The lady didn't know what type they were. I think they're a few weeks old now but I can't remember for sure. They looked just like my baby welsummers earlier. Size-wise they're definitely standard-size (not bantam) since they are the same size as the welsummers I put them in with (of the same age).
I'll try to get pictures later.
Thanks!
Jenny
