The Sussex thread!

I only have Sussex mixes. From what I've read about their loud personalities, this one has got to have some Sussex in her blood. (also has some pink tint to her brown eggs)
What's my photo-bombing chicken, Precious, thinking?

Since she wasn't going to give me a chance to photograph anything else, I took a few more.

Those speckled sussex are really growing on me.  I think I'll be adding one some day.  How are they about egg production?

Ours recently started laying. She just about lays an egg every other day or two days then one off.
Our SS also isn't very loud, she is one of the quietest in our flock.

Cute pictures! I love when they look directly into the camera like that.

2 of my hens are quiet, the other is the most vocal thing. She's constantly voicing her opinion about me being in the pen, about mealtime. I just sent her to her new home. Coloration wasn't good, great layer though. This is my newest hen.

My first speckled sussex egg happened yesterday and the day before that my silkie laid her first egg :)
But back to the speckled sussex. Her egg was larger than my polish eggs, but it was white! with a ting to it of off white. I'm feel disappointed I was hoping for some color to my basket to go with my beautiful birds. Will her eggs change color? I remember when my polish tophats laid eggs they were ting/ off white and than became pure white. She is a hatchery bird too.

Our SS egg is similar in color to the silkie egg, (ones on the right), but a tiny bit darker and a bit bigger. Silkie egg is around 30-34 g and SS is 44-47g . The other eggs in pic are from our barnie and EE.

your basket is gorgeous!! i love the colors and thanks for sharing. I hope her eggs turns that color. Still haven't received a second egg from her. Waiting to see how or if it changed color. I just want a little diversity :) I have one easter egger who is laying green eggs.

Thanks! I love the different colors. We also have two leghorns that lay large white eggs. They're our reliable layers. Lol

Congrats on the new layer & colorful variety of eggs. Because it was a 1st egg, there's a slight chance of a change in color. Usually, they gradually fade over the laying cycle until molt. Even if the shell color is the same as another hen's, you'll still be able to identify by shape & size. My 3 - 4 yr old hens give giant duck-sized eggs & the hens under 18 mo lay smaller ones like from the store. My banty lays "medium" eggs that are simply cute.
