The Sussex thread!

My girl lays a med-lg light tan(darker than tinted but not brown) egg. 5 or so each week. Honestly if you don't like her personality I doubt you will like wellsummers either. My wellies are even less "friendly" than my SS. They couldn'y care less if I have food/treats. It's like they are to good for humans. At least the SS want my treats.

I'm sick of waiting for the chicks to hatch!!!

What do your Sussex eggs look like? Does anyone have any pics to post?

I bought a Welsummer chick because I wanted dark brown eggs. She ended up being a Speckled Sussex. She's not really friendly or sweet and I'm not sure what kind of eggs she'll lay. Trying to decide if I should sell her or keep her. Thanks in advance!
I'll get a pic of mine later :)

Hello there!

Last week I ordered two Light Sussex chickens, here in the French country and instead of 6 months, the poor babies were 3 weeks old. Clearly some misunderstanding. Or not, I don't know.
They were to be collected at some agricultural shop. French ladies, all 80+ and all wearing their well known aprons as all french country ladies do, were waiting with me for their order with carton boxes in a long queue.

I could not bear the thought that the chicks would have to go back home to the breeder, motherless with travel stress etcetera, so I took them anyway.
Back home I gave them a hot water bottle, some chick food, water and tlc. They slept for 14 hours or so.

Well, they are lovely like all chicks and after a week they are doing just fine. I keep them in the house during the cold nights and let them out in the morning in the former guinea pig coop.
They chirp non-stop just before going to sleep, which is a very cosy and reassuring sound.

I wanted some hens who would go broody, because my other ones aren't that keen.
So now I have to wait a year. If they are indeed hens and no roosters, which is the question, haha. We'll see.

I'm a little miffed, ok, a lot miffed and need to vent a little. I ordered 15 (the minimum) SS day olds from a small hatchery. I can't complain about the condition of the chicks. I did lose 2 in the first 2 days, but I think that's the risk of shipping chicks and I was reimbursed for both. But as they've grown, I've been watching them get more and more white. They're 8 weeks now and some are more white than mahogany. One has a white body and a mahogany back. I didn't expect SQ birds, but I don't think they are all pure SS. I found out the pictures on the web site aren't her birds. All of these birds (I think most are cockerels) will be going. After I ordered them, I found hatching eggs from someone else. They are 4 weeks and look so much better in every way. I own my own business and I'd be out of business if I treated my clients like this. I can't decide if I should contact the person or just let it go. Sorry for the negative post, but thanks for listening.
