The Sussex thread!

I love the color of the Speckled Sussex but they have single combs:( are there any breeds with rose or pea combes that have the same coloring?

Cross it! I can't think of any off the top of my head, but you could cross it with something else. I know someone up in the cold mountains that does that on purpose to his flock... for frostbite reasons.... seeing as you in Minnesota... I'd say you have the same reason.

thanks, what color would be best to cross them to that would be easiest to breed back to the speckled color?

You could cross Speckled Susse with Rose Comed RIRs or Buckeyes and breed those offspring together and a quarter of them should be colored like the SS and have the rose or pea combes depending on the breed you choose. I'm hopeing to work on Tolbunt and/or Buff Mille Fluer Large Fowl Wyandottes but it would be take several generations to get them right.

I would use the RC RIR. The speckled is a mahogany and the RIR is mahogany. The buckeye is more brown. We are told they used a RIR and dark Cornish cross to develop the Buckeye Bantam. Guess either would work. You may be able to find some good Buckeye Bantams near you by checking on the Buckeye thread. For RIR Bantams see Bob Blosl on the Heritage thread.

I am in WI, and my sussex do just fine, with minimal frostbite, no matter what kind of chicken frostbite can happen on comb or wattles - They get a little bit of it, but nothing to worry about!

Split roo and split hens will give 25% coro, 50% split and 25% light (no way to tell splits from lights).
Coro roo and split hens will give 50% coro and 50% split.
Coro roo and coro hens will give 100% coro.
Coro roo and light hens will give 100% splits.
