The Sussex thread!

Pics
Hey Cheryl... I have been busy busy busy with the DPC stuff. I have been focusing on that and surviving winter.

How is life? I didn't know you hade Coros!!! I got splits but with time, we'll get it worked out into a flock of Coros...

I bought some hatching eggs from pure Coros... 10 eggs, two hatched and the chicks only lasted 24 hours.... so that was very expensive and has kept me from trying the pure coro thing again, so much inbreeding with just one line. Ya know?

Kathy great looking birds!!!!!!!! I too am enjoying my sussix's.

Hi Scott! Glad you are enjoying yours, too! I think I have a couple about ready to start laying. We have 8 Coronation and 8 splits, as well as our older 3 Light Sussex girls. I'm anxious to start getting eggs. My egg customers are hungry, and I need some layers working!

Can someone please tell me how tall a Sussex hen and rooster are? I keep hearing they are "huge" birds, but am trying to determine how big they are with overall height. How many inches tall are they?

I just started with the coros. I got some from greenfire, rarechicks and another farm. Total 12 ranging in age from 9 to 14 weeks. Looks like I have 3 roos to choose from. I may get some pics today of the roos, jsut to see if any has some opinions about SOP.

They are so pretty all those white birds hanging together while free ranging!

I can't tell you in inches exactly, but their BACK, not head... is about even with the rim of a 5 gallon bucket and they are roughly 15 inches or so wide.

I may just feel froggy and go measure for you later.

a 5 gallon bucket is pretty tall---that's amazing if you're talking about their back hitting the rim of a 5g bucket! I just have a mental photo of like a 3 foot tall hen! Like a monster bird!

I love them. I totally fell in love when they grew out and saw how big, QUIET, and gentle they are.

I was reminded here after posting... not all 5 gallon buckets are the same height. Mine that I use are not the super tall paint ones... they are from a dairy farm. Anywho. I'll try to get a measurement. I would guess 18+ inches... to their back. To their head measurement is misleading... chickens got LONG NECKS! Lol

Oh gosh, I was definitely picturing the paint 5g buckets! LOL!

Please do try to get to the top of the head if you could! If you get a measurement of 24" or so, I'd be less afraid then if the birds turned out to be 30+ inches. Because I'm definitely picturing these birds looking like 5g paint buckets with legs! LOL!
