There are fancy descriptions, but a Crossfit gym is much different than a regular gym. (look up Crossfit games 2011....amazing athletes...I'm far from, lol). It's your back to basics functional movements. Workouts consist of different components, almost mix and match: situps, pushups, pullups, toes to bar, knees to elbow, ring dips, running, rowing, box jumps, burpees, kettlebells, jump rope. Weights include: snatch, deadlift, cleans, jerks, etc. So, a WOD can be for time, AMRAP (as many reps as possible), etc. It offers muscle confusion from day to day, so you're constantly challenged. I've actually grown MUSCLES, lol! They scale a lot of things when you're learning technique, if you can't do pull ups, etc. A workout may only be 20 minutes, but it's intense...you may rip through 500 calories. It makes me more accountable to what and when I eat.... Im sure there is probably one near you!
I did look it up, love it!!! Sounds like PX-90 which I would love to get, but have no private place to work on it. No tv in my barn! I guess I could watch some of the videos and make it up as I go, but to music.
If I had to compare it, I would liken it more to P90X2, which just came out. But its really not a fair comparison, because Crossfit has both muscle building components as well as cardio, while P90x is primarily muscle build, and Insanity is more cardio.
Honestly, I really dig CF, thought I couldn't do it, but they work with you at any level! I like being around people to work out, and you have a trainer at CF to correct your technique.
You mentioned P90x, though....they just came out with a IPhone App for it, if that works better then a full TV! I might as well say, I'm a Team Beachbody "coach" (which basically means I paid for an upgraded membership and get a discount), but I'm familiar with plenty of their DVDs. I throw a free "fit" club in my town because we do not have any group fitness classes, so this provides support, motivation and accountability. Anyhow, we've tried Brazil Butt Lift (favorite so far), 10 minute trainer, Body Gospel,Hip Hop Abs, and Turbo Fire. turbo fire is pretty awesome, and Chalene is very inspirational and motivational.
