The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Jim, if you think it might be the weight of the feathers, pluck some to see.

I love his comb and the smaller size of the wattles. I would hate to see that you loose them for some heavy feathers. Better to be sure.

From what I've read it is recessive so I may try and breed it out. If I can't, I'll have some pet quality Wellies. I also just plucked some feathers so I'll see what happens. I'm going to visit a friend now and I'm going to see if she has a boy I can buy or some eggs at least. I'll keep you updated.
Thanks for the kind words.
Jim

When he is relaxed his tail goes to the left but that is the side with longer feathers. He does hold it straight too.

If it's curved when he's relaxed, then I think he has wry tail.

I have two wellsummers in our new flock and really like them. Does anyone know of breeders of show stock in Arkansas or around Arkansas? I would like to breed them and I want a really nice rooster. Mine came from Ideal and they look like the breed standard photos. I'll see what their egg production is like before I decide to breed them for sure, but I'd like to start rooster shopping now. I'm near Little Rock, AR and can travel to Western Tennessee or anywhere around Arkansas. I wouldn't mind getting a chick or small cockrel shipped to me from a good out of state breeder.

They MAY look like the standard to the inexperienced eye but hatchery stock is not as close as the breeder's or show stock. If you try to breed them with a show quality Welsummers, the offsprings may not be as good as their father or there are some inconsisency going on. Hatcheries don't breed them to the standards, they only bred them for egg production and you may NOT get the real terra cotta eggs.

I've had members that did buy Welsummers from various hatcheries and they were disappointed. Only very very few had good ones.

If you want to show your Welsummers, start off with the best and you don't have to cull as hard as the hatchery bred stock have to be. If egg production is your thing, then hatchery stock will fit the bill. They make good Easter Eggers!

We don't have any good Welsummer show breeders in Arkansas. Closest would be AL, TN and MS, depending on how far you are willing to drive or have them ship the cockeral to you. This year we have really alot of folks wanting cockerals when we have already culled them out for the year in the spring/summer months. If you can, look up under the Breeder's section of the WCNA for some! Maybe they can throw in a pullet or two if they have any to spare!

Thanks for the information. I'll be watching their egg production and such before I make the decision to breed them. I don't want to show, but produce better babies to sell to local people wanting pretty egg producers for home/pet use. I wanted a show-quality rooster to help improve the quality of the hens.

For the information of All Hands: Anyone looking to buy a late Christmas present for themselves or someone else in the form of photography gear, I may have some helpful info for you.

I just spent about 6 months researching cameras, lenses, flashes, you-name-it. In doing so I came across some excellent sites which allow you to do a side-by-side comparison of various brands/models and see the similarities/differences according to each of the various specs. There were also sites that provided indepth reviews on same. I also looked at a half dozen to maybe a dozen different sites to purchase from.

Even though I still wound up spending over three grand for everything, I could have easily spent another $1500-2000 for the same stuff if I hadn't taken the time to research everything like I did. So I'm offering to pass on what I learned to anyone who might be in need of such info. If interested, email me as I may not see your request on here.

Btw, now that I have my new camera, I plan to start a photo album consisting of a weekly pic for male and female from Day Old thru 1-year of age. I also plan to build a new website where I'll put these photos so all can see them when they have a question about what their bird should look like at a given age.

God Bless,

Well, It has been about a month of laying for 2 unknown lineages wellie pullets that I have. Even tho the eggs they hatched from looked good, the egg color is light. The roo that I have is their hatch mate, so it looks like no home grown Wellie chicks for me this year.

Good thing there are some really great breeders on BYC.
