The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Got some pics of my Wellies today...Woody 17 weeks and Wilma 18 weeks
They are looking really nice.

baby
now

thought I bought an amerucana. ?...guess its not
Keep an eye on those earlobes. If they stay that white, then you have a brown leghorn. A welsummer pullet will have pale earlobes that then turn red when they get older. (white is a DQ for the breed)

i have a question..if i let my wellie roo breed one of my wyandottes will the pullets i get lay dark brown eggs like the wellies or is it still a crap shoot and it can go either way..
Likely somewhere in between.

I crossed my welsummer male to a BR female, making a black sex link. My BR laid a pale tan egg. Here is the BSL egg. (and yes, it's really that color)

So far, only the one BSL hen. And yes, her egg is a shade of plum every time - the tint changes a bit, but still plum colored. My BR is one of my original hatchery hens and was a fantastic layer of jumbo sized eggs, so I wanted a daughter from her. This BR is now 5 1/2 years old, so laying is pretty sporadic - she hasn't laid all summer. Until this summer she was still laying 5 days a week. If she starts back up in the spring, I may hatch some more from her.

Hey guys, hope you don't mind me popping in here

I have 4 welsummers, now 8 weeks old. They were all supposed to be pullets, but it seems one is a rooster... oh well.
One of my female welsummers has black feathers all over her head and face. I was wondering if that is a common trait of the breed? None of the other 3 i have, have these markings. I'm quite new to chickens, and very new to welsummers so bare with me

I snapped this photo just as she blinked, hence why her eye looks weird.

She's not pure welsummer. Where did you get her?

And yes, the one in the lower right corner of this picture is a male.

Hmmm thats interesting... I'm not particularly fussed if she's pure or not, she's a lovely pretty thing, probably my favourite of the bunch, its a little annoying though because i bought her as a pure breed. I got her from a local breeder.
What is it that makes you think she's not pure? Is it just the black feathering around her head? Also got any ideas on what she might be crossed with?

Here are the 4 of them as babies, not sure which one is which though. A couple of Australorps there too.

This is the best side on shot i've got of her, I need to get some better photos of her.

This is the roo... looks pretty pure to me? Although the black colouring on his chest and redish feathering on his body has taken quite a while to come through.

This is one of the other females, both of the normal looking females look pretty much identical, they're very hard to tell apart. They also look pure to me... hopefully i'm right!

those are for sure wellie looking babys but i agree shes a cross of some kind..maybe a black australorp cross..unless you plan on showing her i wouldnt give it another thought tho..and in my opinion its the black feathered head that makes me think its a mixed breed..

i guess some breeders can give us birds with hatchery quality..you really never no what ya have till ya raise them ..i would think if the person you bought these birds from was a real breeder of wellies then he wouldnt have any mixed breeds in his breeding pens..altho your other birds all look good and this bird you say has taken a shine to you and you to her ..like i said unless you plan on showing them i wouldnt get to worked up over it..but i would let him[the breeder] know tho..
