Oh yeah. I don't just have 8 hens. And one rooster (named Woozer)I seem to forget that I have 17 assorted ladies that are 12ish weeks old waiting for me to build their home and yard. And well, one of the Speckled Sussex "ladies" is crowing a mighty fine crow and considering "she" sports a fine comb, I think I have one less hen and one more rooster. If I had to pick a rooster, it would not be Sussex. But oh well. someone will want him I hope.

I am raising five pullets together, 2 Wellies, 3 Splash BLRW and one Dominique and they all get along fine. But they grew up together as chicks. In fact I really do not know who the dominate hen is, maybe the Dominique but I am not sure. Most people like to introduce new chickens gradually. The new additions are placed near enough to be seen but not within pecking range. Some put the newcomers into a crate or some other confined area so they can be seen but not accessed. Can you make some type of arrangement like that ?

As far as you looking for/wanting welsummer bantams. I do have some very nice pairs and trios available right now(from day old chicks up to almost adults, some should be coming into lay soon, as they were march/april hatch), they girls are still laying somewhat, but not as well now, as I have switched them over to 40% layer pellets, and 60% corn to stop their production for the winter.

My last set date will be this coming wednesday. And after that no more hatching until I do a hatch in January for the fairs(maybe one in between if I import eggs this year).

Yes, the mean girls are from a feed store that orders from different hatcheries. so i guess it isn't their fault they are demented and ornery but rather poor bloodlines. I sure won't be using them for breeding. Just tasty eggs if they get that far. I will give them until they move into the new digs and then if they get it together they can have a career as providers of good and pretty eggs. And if they don't come around, I will have to figure what to do. Never killed a chicken and surely don't want to.
I will contact you with my email addy so you can let me know next spring. I'll be looking forward to the babies.

Awesome!!! Im already looking forward to spring, but winter hasnt even started yet... :-( But it usually goes pretty quick when you start a hatch in January, and then start hatching full time in feb/march...

Yup winter slips away nicely when you fire up the greenhouse in Jan or Feb too. Nothing like hanging out in the greenhouse with nice music going and the rain playing an accompaniment on the roof. And inside the coffee is hot and the little seedlings are breaking green in the peat. Makes for a short winter. Almost as nice, I imagine, as spending January in Maui.
I'll be wanting to start my new little feathered family in May I think because it makes it easier to get them out into a yard in summer. Around here you never know when summer will finally show up. This year we rained till July and some into August.. Stupid! Just Stupid.
Also, it appears that the bad behavior has calmed down. I'm hopeful now.

here is the rough head count:

4 roos (judging by the combs)

8 pullets

3 of them are bantams, the rest of them are LF.

 

[Hens and Roos]

We're at day 20 today and noticed that one of the eggs had gunk on it in one area-quickly removed it from the incubator so it wouldn't explode-it had a bad smell and didn't notice any movement in it. Hopefully this doesn't effect the rest of the hatch
