The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Alright all you Wellie breeders...what is your favorite Wellie egg color? Do you like the deep dark terra cotta color, or dark with speckles, light with speckles? I have 2 layers that are all over the map with their egg colors lately. I'm starting to appreciate the light eggs with speckles a little more than I used to. Maybe because they stand out so much better next to the Marans eggs.

Also...I noticed my BCM's occasionally lay a purplish egg due to a heavy coating of bloom...does anyone have a similar experience with their Wellies?

I like them all, love the variety, but I especially love the dark (brick color) ones with tiny speckles.

I have not yet had a wellie lay an egg with a purplish color.

I love that rich color, too. I never get one that isn't scratched up though.

I swear the girls tease me, knowing I want them in perfect condition for Christmas decorations.

I've got a wellie hen that occasionally lays with the purple hue on the dark spots, they look more subdued compared to her normal speckled eggs. I like the contrast of the spackles against the lighter terra cotta. I'm really lovin these welsummers, can't wait for the next set of eggs to arrive so i can get the bator going again.

Are yours matte finish? Mine are, but I've seen some others that have a sheen to them like a satin finish. (not as glossy as a Marans egg)

These are what mine look like, although one of my girls is laying a bit lighter right now.

yes it is more of a matte finish that leaves the speckles themselves looking slightly purple...only happens every now and then, not consistently purple.

the eggs from our girls range from light terra cotta to dark and some have speckles on them- we like the and it is always neat to see someone's face when they see the eggs for the first time! Our eggs tend to have the matte finish.

We have a couple of the younger girls who won't lay in the nest box and hide them in the shavings... under the roost of course!

Congrats on the hatches and good luck!

I like the speckles on the eggs, dark or light, they should have lots of speckles and not just be dark like maran eggs. I've had quite a variety in from shipping eggs received. Would like some real splotchy speckled ones though. Then I'd never have to paint easter eggs again!! POLKA DOTS ANYONE??

We have 1 or 2 girls that put speckles on their eggs but it varies from day to day- of course my kids figure that the speckles are caused due to "farting" by the hen as the egg is going through the paint booth!

LOL Hens! Farting makes perfect!

I like the smooth colored surface, matte or shiny but the standard is not specific so speckles and smooth are both accceptable. I dont like wild paint blobs or too much speckles, it is rather distracting to me and my eyes.

Oh yes they are great for Easter egg dye. I've tried one with RED and it was downright goreous! RED terra cotta it was! Any other color except green was muted almost purplish in color. One turned out gray.
