The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I went to the MO State Poultry Show last weekend. I was once again the only exhibitor of Welsummers. I'm hoping to get more interest in this in the future. So, I was thinking, if the breed club started charging a small monetary membership fee. We could afford to provide ribbons/rosettes, and possibly trophies at some shows. We would also be able to do regular newsletters and breeder directories. Not all members have access to the internet, and it's a shame those members are being left out. Wellies are such a wonderful breed. It's such a pity that there is so little interest in them. I'm hoping to be elected secretary.

What are your thoughts on this? I was also hoping to put together a club meet at the Ohio show this year. 2012 Annual Meet
Southern Ohio Poultry Breeders

I think it would really spark interest in the club to be able to issue prizes for placings in shows. I would be more than willing to do this if I was elected secretary for the club. I've been raising Wellies for 4 years and want to work hard to promote them as much as possible. Who's with me?

Any money in the club will be open for members to see, completely transparent. Right now, any monetary necessities are taken care of by directors. Not only is that not fair to the directors, but it also slows the growth of the club.

If we could round up enough donations, we wouldn't need a membership fee. Which would be ideal. I'm also thinking about incentives for showing, like year end awards, Master breeders, Hall of Fame, etc. I'm willing to donate my time for free to do this.

I have two Welsummers, about 5-6 weeks old now, which I got from the feed store. They were supposed to be pullets, but I do know that sometimes a roo slips through. I just noticed two days ago that one of the two seems a bit taller, and its comb is definitely bigger (about twice the size, maybe more!) and it's redder (the other one's is just pink, this one is blush colored).

Do I have a roo, or is there still a chance it's just a pullet with a larger comb? Do some pullets have bigger combs? Do I need to get a picture to be sure, or is there no need from the description I gave? (I'd get one now but it's after dark and they're sleeping.)

Thanks in advance!

Yes, a picture is worth a thousand eggs.

Does it look anything like this 6 week old? If so - congratulations it's a boy!
