The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I had a couple folks ask me to post pictures of the Champion Continental Welsummer Pullet from last Saturday's Winter Brisk Show held in Chehalis, WA. Judge was Butch Gunderson. Currently the APA Vice-President too.

I hope these wind up showing her Type, Condition, and Color well enough. Especially the leg color as that's something I'm really working on. It's not bad but still needs improvement. Next year's crop should be even better. I also should've opened the cage door. Didn't think about it at the time as was hurried due to the Coop-Out announcement and such.

For anyone interested, I'll post some pictures of the Barnevelder Pullet - over on that thread - that took Reserve Continental. If I get time later and if anyone wants, I'll try to post a couple of pics too of the male I took and the hen I took that got 1st Place.

God Bless,
Congrats! She is very nice looking!

I wanted to get some more experienced thoughts on my Welsummer roo. He's 16 weeks old, and has crooked toes, but beyond that, how does he look? And do you all think the toe thing is genetic or perhaps caused by a bad incubator temp or some other external variable? Thank you for any feedback!
Did you hatch him out or get him from someone else? How long has his toes looked like this? Do you have any hatch mates of his to compare to- this would help you at least see if they also had crooked toes. Temp of incubator can play a factor. If you are wishing to use him in breeding you might have to do some test mating and see what the offspring look like. Given that he is 16 weeks, he does have a bit of growing to do yet. Hope this helps a bit.

Royce, that's a good looking bird. Can I ask what type of feed you use? She looks nice and plump!!!

My birds get a mixture of stuff. It's mostly Layer Pellets but I throw in some Flock Raiser, VigorPlus, Catfood, and 5-Way Scratch this time of year. They also get to free range every day.

She's actually not that big of a bird. Just looks that way in the pic. I haven't weighed her but I'm sure she's under the upper limit for the Standard.

God Bless,

He's still too young to tell for sure but a couple of things I'm seeing are that his tail set is too high and his tailfeathers are way too sparse right now. Everything else looks pretty good and he has exceptionally nice leg color.

For those who complimented me on the pullet that took Best Continental - thank you to you all.

God Bless,

I'm hoping to add some Welsummers to my flock this spring. I'm looking for nice dark eggs, so I'd rather avoid a hatchery.
Ideally, I'd like to find hatching eggs within driving distance. The WCNA lists John Hall in Vermont as a breeder, but no contact info. Does anyone know if he is still breeding and might have hatching eggs for sale next spring?
Or anyone else in New England have Welsummer hatching eggs?

Rattie, I'll post a couple pics of the cockerel I took last Saturday to the show just so you can have a bit of a comparison. Remember, your bird still has a lot of growing to do so keep that in mind. I'm not saying this bird is all that better but here are some things to compare: 1) look at the Type. Keep in mind that a picture is only a snapshot in time so it may not be definitive. But look at the angle of the back and in particular the angle of the tail. 2) Check out the difference in eye color. 3) Points on the comb. and 4) Just the overall color - especially the breast area.

If you click on the pics they open up into a larger pic and you can even magnify them in certain areas to get a closer look. Such as at the eye for example. I hope that helps.

God Bless,
