The Wyandotte Thread

I would say you have a darker Splash with 3 lighter Splashes. The darker one might end up a light blue. All mine like that turned out dark Splashes.

we don't have a problem with bunny tail on our partridge wyandotte bantams.....
stubs are where the feathers grow between the toes and sometimes on the shanks

Yours have the same tail as mine. They are not like the standard. Wyandottes are not to have "cochin" tails which one poster informed me was called "bunny tails". Looks like everyone is breeding for that tail or better said "not breeding against it". Not trying to be cruel, just critical of breed--it does include mine.

When you google them for pictures, silver laced has the best form. In fact middle of page 2 of this thread, shows some excellent tails on silver laced that I'm not seeing in other pictures.

Ok....didn't know you have seen our birds in person before. I will give you the hen in the first picture on our website....that one needs updated becasue she was part of our first breeders a few years ago, but the second hen is not "bunny tailed" and that is the same for most of our breedings from this year.

Ok I am going to jump in here and give my limited opinion, I am not a poultry judge and as far as I know you may be a poultry judge or a very experienced breeder of wyandottes. I can only base my opinion on what I know as a breeder of wyandottes....a breeder of hundreds of bantam and large fowl wyandottes each year.

The Partridge Wyandotte Bantams due tend to have more of a bunny tail than other wyandotte bantams, but there are plenty of Partridge Wyandottes out there that have correct tails....and this is the reason that Partridge Wyandottes win alot of Best of Breed places at the poultry shows, White Wyandottes win the most with Partridge coming in a close second. We just got back from the Lebanon, In show where a partridge wyandotte got BB in a class of 174 wyandottes, I got RB with a Columbian Wyandotte pullet.

What are you calling a bunny tail? I call a bunny tail a round tail that is round on the sides and the back, looking like a cochin tail (almost like a round ball)..........a good wyandotte tail should look like a teepee from the back coming to a point when looking from the back. Now most wyandotte bantams will have a slight rounded look at the very top of the tail...we want them not to...but I dont call it a bunny tail if there is a slight rounding of the feathers at the very top. Having some faults with a tail on the wyandotte is normal, not many people have perfect tails on their bantams (some do), but having a few faults does not make them a bunny tail.

Frankly I would worry just as much about the width of the head, having a back that is too long and rock like, correct color, good lacing all the way back to the tail...........the tails on my sons Partridge Wyandottes are good and the least problem with his line, lacing and color is his focus this year.

I am not trying to be difficult, but I dont think all Partridge Wyandotte have bunny tails......you should go to a show with a large class of Partridge and look them over in person and not base your opinion on pictures or one line of birds at your house.

There are many different faults in all breeds. This is not meant as a personnal attack on ANYONE's birds. My pet peeve is the tails as the other features seem to be dealt with but not the tails. I'm sure some breeders have figured this out in partridge color, I just have not seen them nor has anyone put any pictures up to show me that they don't have "cochin like" tails.

Peace

Have you ever attended a poultry show and looked at them...or are you judging them by looking at pictures? This is also not meant as an attack, but you really cant tell that much about them from one picture of each bird, handling the bird and looking at a picture is two different things.

Yes, I have been to poultry shows. I have seen live birds. It's just a fault with bantam wyandottes that doesn't seem to be of major concern that does drive ME nuts. I've talked to breeders that like this--again I have no problem w/anyone breeding whatever they like. When you read the bantam standard, the tails are a definite weakness. as is pointed out by you the heads aren't blocky as the "whites" are plus the legs are too long and not thick enough. Again I've seen whites that are almost perfect form while partridge have areas to breed out.

See page 2 picture and ask "do my bantam wyandottes have this form? I have been around chickens for 45+ years, know the standard in breeds that interest me, & wish partridge had the "form" of the whites of 10 years ago. My hens show better form than my roosters do but I still wish they were better. Mine are no better than others I've seen and not much worse either. I don't breed for show (no time, interest, etc) but I do breed for standard--no I don't sell either.

Not to make anyone upset, but I'd love to see some partridge that had great wyandotte form.
