I finally got my first egg from my SL Wyandotte, Ivy! She is seven months old. It's about time! I have been hoping for a broody hen hope she might be. My BLR roo watched over her the whole time she was laying the egg. When she got up my roo promptly sat on the egg. Maybe I will have a broody rooster.

This last weekend many of us traveled to Oklahoma to attend the 2010 APA National. I have only one gripe!

Several walked up to me and asked if the Buff Wyandotte bantams were mine. Smiling, I said yes each time. I was congratulated on their type and quality. Most said that they also had a few Buff Wyandotte Bantams...however, did not bring any to the show.

I placed Best of Variety and Reserve Variety.

Wow, Best of Variety and Reserve of Variety at the APA National!

It would mean so much more if I earned the wins! My pair was the only ones shown. Why come to a national show and leave a rare variety at home?

My cockerel is from Superior Farms via http://www.acornhollowbantams.com/prices.cfm My pullets from a different source. We are hoping for some good birds out of them this spring. If you have Buff Wyandotte Bantams, please plan on entering them at Crossroads...the APA/ABA Joint National. PLEASE!!!!! It would mean so much to me to win Best of variety at the joint nationals if I was able to actually compete with someone!

We did have some competition in the Buckeyes. We lost to a hatchmate AGAIN! But at least we had competition. One well known judge told me, he, and most judges, if they see only one or two in a variety/breed, they useually never go back and look twice. It is where there are competition taht a bird has a better chance at winning a class. A friend of mine entered a Mottled Jap Bantam hen. She won Best of variety and then Best of Breed! There were over 200 Japs entered and it was also the Jap club national. That is an awesome win! Plus she is a BYCer!

So folks, start showing those rare colors of Wyandottes!

Note: Seen some lovely Wyandottes in a white trailer with Kentucky tags! Never got over to really look at them in the show, Jacob had me a bit busy!

You actually WANT competition?

I know many fanciers who hate competition. Some will only sell poor quality birds to local fanciers to avoid any competition. I knew one guy who had a house full of trophies from showing colours and breeds that no one else ever had. As soon as anyone competed with him- he quit showing that variety.

If you keep on with the attitude you have - you may get beat from time to time - THEN how will you feel?

Just kidding of course - the hobby needs more people who think like you. I hope I can invigorate the local hobby with all the birds I'm bringing in. The more competition - the better time I'll have!
