There he was bold as brass

regarding the racoon. i live in a neighborhood and had one climb my fence and come inside and eat with the cat.. scared the bejeebers out of me.. i yelled at the kids stay upstairs and no matter what they heard DON'T open the door.. then i threw a toy at it.. it stood up looked and me and wandered back out the screen door on the kitchen..lol wasn't rabid.. just used to people. turned out latter that night i heard it in the front yard with it's babies..... it stayed about a week and moved on.... never bothered the chickens.. it had cat food lol

i can honestly say that i have never seen a raccoon that was full grown
last night i think that one killed my rooster because his head is missing
i cant believe how evil they are
now i have to worry about them coming to my coops during the day

yeah it was huge, like...easily the size of a dog. it hasn't been back during the day yet and we've been in chicken lock-down (chickens dont go out unless we're here to supervise at the moment).

UPDATE

We haven't seen him during the day today, and I've advertised looking to rent/borrow a trap to catch him because those raccoon traps (havahart) are $78.00 CAD and with our horse being injured we really can't afford that right now (but will be getting one asap!, mostly because we realized it'd be good for catching the barn cats for their annual shots).

Has anyone thought to poison a coon in a trap? Feed them something laced with poison or something along those lines...

The one I have read about in many threads on here is Golden Marlin. You mix about 1/2 C Golden marlin to 1/4 C fruit jelly (or in that ratio) But please remember:

1) This is a non-discriminatory poison--it WILL kill ANYTHING that eats it (including pets, so make certian yours are contained)

2) whatever eats it will be dead within 20feet, it works that quickly.

3) Golden Marlin is a registered pesticide, and as such it is a against the federal law to use it in a manner that is not on the Label (See I remembered AmazonDr!!

)

Basically it will work very well, but just be super careful with it (and don't get caught). I believe you can buy it at any Tractor Supply. Best wishes!

My fear wouldn't be so much about it having rabies, since there are so few cases, but distemper. It shows itself simular to rabies.
We had a neighbor come over to let us know that there was a raccoon out in the edge of our back yard that wouldn't leave. It was about 10am. Animal control/Fish and Wildlife (one of them, it was 10 years ago, I forget which one) came out. Since he was unable to catch it with a snare around the neck and it raced up a tree he ended up shooting it.
Animals with distemper are also dangerous to be around and distemper spreads easily through bodily fluids ie. blood, saliva. So it can also easily infect your pets.

So keep an eye on this oversized masked rat. If it starts acting weird, and trust me...you'll know, along with it being out during daytime I would definitely call someone!

Good luck!!

it's got rabbis or mange. one of the two. either one, it needs to be put down. quickly, with any means necessary. if it were walking up my driveway and i didn't have anything to get the job done, i would get in my car and take care of business! if it weren't in my driveway, i'd be out there with a machete, baseball bat or a brick. and do NOT touch it, for any reason. use a shovel with gloves on.

I just ordered a pound of Golden Malrin for flies. Nothing kills flies better but you have to be real careful where you put it so animals can't get into it. I can see where ingesting a 1/2 cup in jelly would give a raccoon real, hopefully fatal, problems. Careful you don't get a barn cat!

Crystalchic- raccoons are not evil but they are very very ruthless. They occupy the evolutionary niche between weasels and bears (and are also distantly related to dogs!) so if you think about that a minute, you'll know this animal is really tough stuff.

You never want to tangle with a raccoon close range and don't send one dog after a big one, send a pack. A large raccoon can easily drown a dog and that is another reason they head for water when being hunted.

I used to rehabilitate these critters until I got shredded too many times. Then I got smarter (but it took a while).

Lol yes, it will kill. I remember reading on here a fellow's friend used this to kill a trouble raccoon, and the next morning he woke up to about 20 dead raccoons and a few dead skunks
