There's alot of free meat out there

Hmm.. that hasn't been my experience at all.. but I'm sure there are some, I don't mind people butchering, as long as it's done humanley, but I sometimes am bothered a bit by the gross jokes.

Just have to ask, how many professional butchers and stunners do you know very well on a personal basis? Well enough to know how they work with live animals? I know several who are involved in rescue organizations and a few that are, paradoxically, married to vegetarians! There will always be the odd bad apple in any group, but overall I’ve found they are incredibly compassionate towards animals, and I have have known many quite well.

Part of your OP struck me as funny, then I was shocked and sickened by the chopped head.... I was horrified and sickened again to learn that chickens are chopped up LIVE for pet food (really??? Gaaahhhh!!!!) -that's disgusting and so sad .... makes me want to make my cats and dog into vegetarians immediately, which is absurd.... sigh ... this is what I hate about being bipolar. But, I'm here to learn, not to judge, and I certainly learned a lot from this thread, so thanks.

Yes the more you learn, the worse it gets!

That’s why I’m now vegan, except for the eggs that I eat from only MY birds. I believe that there’s no humane way to kill something that does not want to die.

I have done a lot of that over the years myself. Free roosters, free goats, free rabbits, free llama, free sheep. Almost picked up a free hog twice now but others beat me to them.

One thing that I have learned over the years is "do not" tell people that you intend to slaughter the animal for food... That is surprisingly unpopular with people...

You should always tell people what you’re doing with their animal. I would be furious if I found out someone who was taking one of my birds ending up killing it and didn’t tell me!

Oh definitely!

People freak out over people in China killing and eating dogs. Meanwhile we do the same thing here to chickens, cows, pigs, ect.

I mean where do you draw the line? Pig are much more intelligent than dogs, but yet pigs are livestock and dogs are only pets.

If offered horse or dog meat, I'd take it in an instance. I've always wanted to try both! My parents had friends from the Phillipines, who insisted that dog is good meat, and that meat from dogs with black fur tastes the best. I'd only ask that the animal had been treated well every day of its life, given the best life possible, and then humanely killed with as little stress as possible.

I never agreed with the whole mindset of "oh no, it's a cute cuddly animal, we can't eat it, but the ugly animals...oh yeah, kill 'em, who cares, they're ugly and dumb." I don't understand why people think the life of a dog is more valuable than the life of a pig or chicken. All three of them feel happiness, sadness, pain, stress, etc. All three of them have the potential to be a good pet or companion animal (pigs are as smart or smarter than dogs) on one level or another, and none of three are sentient or on the same level as humans. Just my two cents.

Aunt Agnus...agreed. This thread has been very fascinating, and I love hearing everyone's viewpoints.

No disrespect... I assume that you are very careful who you re-home your extra cockerels to, which is your right and choice. And as long as you’re aware of what’s happening to male chicks if you buy sexed hatchery stock for laying, then that is also your choice. Everyone has the right to decide where on the spectrum of the food chain they want to be for consumption. And what aspects of the meat industry, if any, they want to engage in. Just want to point out again that we are in a meat bird forum here.

Well, in many Asian countries dogs are considered livestock for the most part, and many people in Europe eat horse meat as well.

Yes, I accidentally upset someone yesterday at the Saturday Market a little, they were complementing the beef short ribs they bought last week, and I replied that it was because they were such happy cows. They got lots of scritches, almost daily grooming, and lots of extra love last year. They were also the sweetest, cutest animals I’ve raised since my fur babies were kittens 15 some odd years ago. If that’s not something they are comfortable with, then I don’t know why they are eating meat in the first place! They were happy and stress free right up to the end.

Oh I am, but I normally don’t sell many of my boys. I have a bachelor flock for them.

And no I do not buy from hatcheries I hatch my own chicks, and once in a while will buy from a breeder.
